It is a common myth that just working hard will get you what you want. We all hear about those that tried hard and overcame all obstacles. You never hear about the people who worked just as hard and wanted to just as much, and broke their hearts, backs, and bank accounts but never achieved their goals. Everything I wanted real bad, and worked very hard for, I never got. Everything I did get was the result of just plain dumb luck. NEVER underestimate the power of money or the importance of LUCK.
On not running for the Senate - totally understandable and I expected this response. Having said that: you wouldn't be the first candidate who is "new at this", and you would have infinitely more viability than most. Your contributions to democracy are immeasurable already. But as a historian, you must also realize: these are not normal times and that Senate seat could be the tipping point between whether we even have a democracy anymore or not. This is very selfish to ask this, but I hope you will therefore still seriously consider being "drafted" for this unexpected role even if it's unfair for me to ask this of you. These are make or break times. Also: why not run to increase the odds we beat Collins, and then, if you really hate it, resign shortly into your tenure to allow the democratic governor to appoint your successor for the next two years until the federal election? Please consider this! It could literally break the fascist hold and give us enough time to push back.
