Racism's a helluva drug. And Trump has known that since long before he tossed his hat into the ring in 2015.

Sexism is an even more potent drug. This country HATES women. As a woman, I sure can feel it.

I cannot disagree with you about this country hating women. Biden put together arguably the best cabinet and surrounded him with the most capable advisors anywhere. And most of them are women.

Now we will go back to a group of all white Fascist men surrounding CFDT. I say surrounded because Trump doesn't listen to anyone except the talking heads on FOX. They are his advisors.

When I was an undergraduate I wrote that the system that the plantation owners had developed was not progressive because it was not very efficient way to earn money, and thus the North, where slavery was abolished who had invested in factories was economically stronger. What I take from that to the winning of Donald Trump, is that the US will enter the beginning of the Fall of the American Empire. Putin wins, we lose, Ukraine loses, will Putin succeed in going after the fall of the EU Empire too? His tradecraft honed in the KGB and DDR is making him very effective. MAGAs are clearly his useful idiots.

John, one must honestly recognize the moment, and make plans for what one will do to handle the moment.

Maybe with Trump’s win, I’m feeling very dystopian, but that’s exactly what I see - the end of the American Empire. We turned the millennium almost 25 years ago and history shows that there is a reordering of human societies about every thousand years. The rise of authoritarianism, diminished human rights, climate change, extreme uneven distribution of wealth, 8 billion people on a planet with fewer resources. I don’t even want to think about the potential of a nuclear world war. We are on the cusp of radical change, but it won’t happen overnight. Ordinary people will suffer greatly, but not the uber wealthy.

A culture writer I respect said that the way men AND women reacted to the Johnny Depp trial a couple of years ago told her that the entire country had shifted hard to the right. I didn't want to believe it but suspected that she might be right. Turns out she was. The same proportion of white women -- a majority -- went for Trump yesterday as did in 2016 and 2020.

Expand full comment

Sure. Wikipedia has a good summary of the actual case at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depp_v._Heard . What this writer noticed was that during and after the trial, a lot more of the public was supporting Depp, including women, than was supporting Heard, even though Heard also won a judgment against Depp and Heard was framing her case as part of the "me too" movement, which was otherwise very popular among women.

When a woman stands up for herself and others, she often challenges the fragile egos of men who feel insecure about their masculinity. This insecurity can lead some to seek validation by aligning with figures they see as embodying strength, even projecting that image onto one of the weakest politicans in the history of this country. As Albert Einstein famously said, "Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore,"

I am so sad. I’ve known that women are hated since I first left the safety of my home for kindergarten. This awareness has grown clearer many times during my long life. But, I was intoxicated by the joy, the positive energy, the uplifting message, the excitement of Kamala’s campaign. I began to believe that we were finally going to overcome this hate. I’m not sure today how I will finish out my remaining years, but I know they will never be what I demonstrated and marched and worked and hoped for. I know that I will not get to see the first woman president. I’ve never felt so defeated.

Cleo, I hear you. I had made a lot of cheeky signs for the weekly rallies in our small town. One read, "Madam President--it's about damn time!" (Glitter was involved...) In my mid-70's, I no longer expect to see a woman president in my lifetime given the results of this election. I'm trying to hold onto my anger, even while feeling completely defeated and discarded, but it's not easy.

This is Emily73..."Hi!" Just give Kamala some time to regroup. She has a family at home and she has those who love, admire and respect her...not only in this country but in many parts of the world.

She only knows how to give 100% plus...it is who she is.

Let's pour out our love and respect to her. During this time, let's ask her, "What can we do for our country?" What can we do to heal and to serve one another within this great democracy?

Kamala is the one I choose to follow. She is the one I respect.

Just because a terrible mistake was made, in my OPINION!, not according to votes- does not keep us from doing good towards our fellowmen and women. It does not keep us from caring for others who are suffering within our country and within the world.

As Michele Obama has directed, "DO SOMETHING! " We do not need to look far to do what women do...we are each created in unique ways to "DO SOMETHING".

We need not stop the good we were created to do. I believe Kamala Harris would agree. She will not stop either....she will look for good and do it!!!!

Voter suppression. I hope there is some real investigation. One of the factors, which is hard to completely measure is the misogynistic culture of some that can't tolerate the thought of a female leader.

I think there were too many issues on the table and everyone was or wasn't voting because of one or another.

College age kids didn't vote because they thought Harris's response to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict was too moderate/lukewarm.

Beside Israel/Palestine, there was Ukraine, Russian interference, immigration, crime, inflation, reproductive rights, tax law, business law, racism, sexism, bigotry, and so much more on the table. Any ONE of these would have been enough to run on in any other year, but ALL of them were part of this race.

So pick your topic. For every single one, there's going to be someone who didn't like their party's candidate's ideas and didn't vote to, I don't know, protest? Clear their conscience?

I have SIGNIFICANT beef with non-voters this year especially. Not performing your civic duty is not a protest. It's dereliction of duty, an unconscionable disregard for the privileges we have (had?) in this country.

Now, no one is going to be able to carry out their civic duty, so I guess it's a moot point anyway.

IMHO it was a psyops project just like we used to keep western Europe from turning to communism after WW II. Like the CIA used in Iran and Guatemala in 1052-1953. Putin perfected it in Hungary and Slovakia. Trump didn't have a ground game. Goes to fear, baked into the amygdala.

My sister and two of her sons, all lifelong Republicans, voted for Trump and for Amendment 4 to protect a women’s reproductive rights. Amendment 4 lost here in Florida because our governor (who they also voted for) put his finger heavily on the scale.

I’m in Florida also. In addition to DeSantis using taxpayer’s money to counter amendment 4, the Florida constitution requires a supermajority of 60% to pass. Minnesota is to damn cold! Okay, a short hiatus from post election blues/ blahs. I grew up in Arizona, then moved to California and got married. When I was about 30 (40+ years ago) right after Reagan was elected, I was very frightened about what he would represent. I was worried for me and my family. So I started thinking about moving to Canada. In February 1981 right after the Reagan inauguration, I got called to go on a business trip to Minneapolis. I had never been so I tried to prepare. I brought my "heaviest" coat which wasn't really very heavy (remember I grew up in Tucson AZ and then lived 10 years in Los Angeles). I landed at the Twin Cities Airport in mid February with the outside temperature at 7 degrees with a wind chill of -10 degrees. When u walked off the plane (onto an air stair, long before there were jet ways to keep you warm) my beard immediately froze.

At this moment it hit me. HOLY CRAP! All of Canada is NORTH of this point!

For every Trump voter against reproductive rights--will they raise these undesired children? Will they lose their beloved pregnant women to septic miscarriages?

For every Trump voter who overlooked Project 2025--will they stay in a toxic marriage? Will they lose their civil service job? Will those who are educators keep their teaching positions? When all forms of contraceptives are banned, will they become celibate?

For every Trump voter that hates the LGTBQ+ community--will they reject their own offspring, their own family members?

For every Trump voter that wants to pull money from Ukraine, and wants Israel to bomb the shit out of Gaza--will you accept sacrificing your children and grandchildren to war?

I think the key is that fear and anger (amygdala-based) override cognition (prefrontal cortex). So if you can keep people angry and fearful, facts won’t matter. Bonus: anger is addictive, creating a rush that leads to feelings of power and strength. I believe CFDT spews anger to his base so that they will not be able to use critical thinking. Also, it’s probably the only way he gets his power high.
