Excellent thesis and through line.

I had a hard time watching A Handmaid’s Tale because it was so dark, and preposterous. But as we creep into the Katie Britt scenes, and others with Casey Desantis and Melania Trump… and Roe is no longer the law of the land, and embryos have more constitutional rights than women in certain circumstances … it’s not much of a stretch of the imagination anymore.

I hope many more women see this regressive trope for the patriarchal scam that it is, and vote.

I cherish and exalt women like Michelle, Jill, Hillary, Ketanji, and Elizabeth, among others.

I had to stop watching A Handmaid's Tale in the second season -- it was just too close to where things have been headed in Republican-land for the past several years :(

I had to stop after the first season’s 3rd episode.

I read Margaret Atwood 's novel in my 20s in the early 80's before debit cards. The plot was entirely plausible and truly terrifying to me, how easy it would be to strip women of all power in an instant. I never could bring myself to watch the show.

We've actually watched all seasons of it. Most series seem to devolve into soap operas, but what the heck.

Anyway, I've often gone back and read the story in Genesis 30. The first three verses tell the story of the Handmaid, but the rest describe polygamy and unfaithfulness. The myyths in the Old Testament seem to be the basis for the Southern Baptist religion.

Dr. McCormick, I was riveted to A Handmaid’s Tale because it was so dark and foretelling!

I need to go back and watch it now. I think my head was in the sand a little. Dark and creepy Britt speech was horrifying.

Btw - loved listening to a couple of your podcasts on the way to work - great expositions and food for thought! Thank you.

EXACTLY! It was SO horrifying. The background was strange....was that really kitchen or a set. And, Pre-taped.

She looked like she was in front of a green screen with the image of a kitchen projected onto the screen behind her. The whole thing looked fake.

It WAS fake.....another fake Republican.

The weird thing was that on SNL, the actress, who looked very much like Katie had the exact same background. It was AI.... SO......Katie could have been anywhere with that AI background. One, of many things that were strange, was that she had what looked the back of a bench behind her, but a round table in front of her. Who puts a bench at a round table??

Agreed. I couldn’t watch the whole thing. It was so jarring for someone like me who watches Newshour. I think the Fox and right wing channels use this fearful tone so much that their viewers must be desensitized. I found it truly unwatchable, unsettling, and manipulative to the extreme.
