NE had one office located in Omaha. It was a very stressful job for him. His boss was a b**** but he stayed because he was a disabled veteran and couldn't do physical labor. Plus the benefits were decent.
When the IRS went to regional service centers he was offered a promotion to GS-7 if he would move to Kansas City. He declined and was never offered another promotion for the next 15 years.
In the late 1950's and early 1960's he would hand carry the daily deposit to the bank three blocks away. The deposits were often over $1,000,000 with several thousand in cash. No one ever bothered him in all the years he made the deposits.
He told us stories about IRS agent's jumping on the hoods of cars with "Property of US Government" stickers. If they moved the cars they could be prosecuted for theft of government property. They would also put the stickers on homes when people owed the IRS money. Imagine an agent doing that today.
I also have 4 former co-workers who have been working on mods to the mainframe systems at the IRS. The IRS is actually very good at catching under reporting of income from banks, investments, and W-2 income due to all of the reporting required from financial institutions and companies.
They have the systems to be better at catching dead beats that don't report but these are labor intensive tasks, to meet with the non-filers. The $80 billion would provide the money to be able to collect from many of the dead-beats.
Conservatives fear the IRS because the wealthy lie about them coming to get the middle and low income earners being arrested for underpayment.
Wow, up close and personal. That's probably one of the agencies that repubs plan to dismantle, like the Education department. How much faster they can tear down than the efforts it takes to build. Bannon knows that better than anyone.
