I was part of the crowd at San Francisco's Dolores Park yesterday, briefly trapped against the side of a church because a brass bandlet needed a place to tune up. They were subsequently joined by miscellaneous players of woodwinds and really miscellaneous percussionists. When they'd warmed up and broke into an impromptu jazz tuba duet, it absolutely established, if you will pardon the expression, the tenor of the day. The signs people carried ranged between deeply heartfelt and deliciously hilarious. The crowd was at once determined, joyful, and visibly committed to taking care of one another. i'm not a big fan of omens, but I dearly hope that this was one.

The violence is depressing, the No Kings demonstrations heartening and (as always) your clarity deeply appreciated.
