Jeri, probably more in common than not, it’s just that there was only one seat to compete for. I was on many hiring committee’s in my time & was so frustrating to have to choose only one candidate when there more than one excellent choice, often wishing we could hire both! Many a time making the call (I always called rather than sending a letter) to let someone know they weren’t selected & if they were one of the excellent choices, I would tell them how impressed we were and to encourage them to continue to pursue positions on campus.
