Last summer, as the world wondered how anyone could choose someone as obviously wrong as Donald Trump again, I had another argument with my cousin, whose views were (and still are) always negative, about what might happen if the unthinkable occurred and somehow, Trump managed to worm his way back into the White House. "No matter what, I will fight it. I have to. It's who I am." So, of course, I agree with John Lewis, and I am still fighting, now at the sides of Heather Cox Richardson, and Glenn Kirschner. We stand up for what is right. And we always will.
Five years ago, we lost Congressman John Lewis, a moral giant who taught us that standing up to injustice is not only our right but our duty. He called it “good trouble,” and he lived it with courage, compassion, and relentless faith in nonviolence.
Lewis bore the bruises of America’s conscience. From the Greyhound station in Montgomery to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, he risked his life so others could vote, speak, and dream freely. What many once dismissed as “lawbreaking” was, in truth, democracy in action.
Today, that same democracy is threatened. Book bans, voter suppression, police brutality, and attacks on bodily autonomy echo the injustices Lewis fought. But his voice still calls to us: “Do not get lost in a sea of despair... Get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
Thousands are rising again—marching, organizing, and speaking out. We honor Lewis not with statues or silence, but with action. When truth is buried and justice denied, good trouble is the only moral choice.
