Thank you for the detailed timeline of our history. My dad was there in WWII following General Patton. He was proud of his service, always attending the reunions of the soldiers who, like him, made it home. He and his division entered concentration camps finding those who somehow had managed to survive Hitler’s genocide. His service and his example shaped my thinking and my life. I am saddened that we have come to this moment in time where we have chosen to forget the sacrifice so many made to fight facism. Especially when the person destroying our democracy has never put his life on the line in service to our country.
Yes, my dad and his two brothers all fought in WWII. One was a parachutist, jumping into enemy territory. The other brother sailed from San Francisco to the South Pacfic. It’s amazing all three came home.
It's already happening. His executive orders are facing a blizzard of lawsuits and more will eventually emerge, for example, challenging his decision to fire 17 inspectors general. Polls show that some of his orders are deeply unpopular, especially the release of the J6 criminals and the withholding of disaster relief.
But it's a prerequisite if people want to resist Trump's autocratic actions. There are encouraging signs - the many lawsuits that have emerged and the polls showing how unpopular some of these orders are with ordinary Americans.
Thank you for the historical perspective underlining the fight against fascism in 1930's and 40's. After WWII, my dad used the GI Bill to attend law school. Those in his class had been promised an expedited course schedule so they could graduate earlier than usual. However, the Dean then pulled back on this promise. Dad said that a group of students, who had just returned from WWII and were not in the mood to be pushed around, surrounded the Dean and told him they would not permit him to break this promise. The Dean relented.
As all of us have said, this 180-degree away from representative government is disheartening and disgusting. It is a slap in the face to all the people, including our military members, who died because of the cavalier cruelty of fascism. It is an insult to those who fought for equality. Our 'norms' of attempting to govern well and fairly are under siege. At this time we appear to be out- flanked and out-numbered. Let us find the will to keep on. That is, let us not simply react to each vile act, take the offensive. Find one cause and fight for it. Boycott all firms that are owned or operated by the Gang of 4 oligarchs who spit on us. Join together to support organizations fighting for the 'rights' of we the people. There is no 'given' outcome. I am not sure following the 'rules' to take down cheaters will work. No, it is not an assured victory to do any of this or other things to oppose this decline. But it is an assured defeat if we stand back in horror and do nothing.
This is such an important message to what this administration is headed toward, in opposition to our democratic post-war history. Trump and his minions are terrifying!
So much progress since our last victory against fascism is now being threatened. We're seeing what the agenda is now, and how recklessly they are burning down everything they can get their hands on. As you said, destroying is easier than building, just like releasing 1500 violent criminals without review of their individual cases was easier than taking the time to keep Americans safe. The dumpster fire is burning bright. This is going to get really ugly. Buckle up, folks, because giving up is impossible, just as it was for the GI's during WW2.
I was lucky enough to go on a Battle of the Bulge Tour in 2018. We walked where the soldiers who died walked. Where they fell. Learned about the terrible hardships they had to endure, and the civilians who helped them at risk to their own lives. Went to the Bastogne Barracks where the message "NUTS"was typed up and sent to the Germans. What I learned and saw will stay with me forever. Why I appreciate HCR so much. When we know history we don't take our country and lives for granted. We know what we were given. And if they did it, we can do it. Thanks Heather.
I’m almost in tears at the thought that this one person could erase what so many fought & died for. The Ignorant Arrogance of this evil regime & their gangster criminal leader.
ThanksHCR as always for putting events of today into perspective from historical events & actions. Truly those who do not know or understand their history are bound to repeat it!
It’s beyond sad this country has fallen to where we currently sit. I fear it will fall further still. The right wing blowhard machine is only getting stronger . We are in dark times indeed.
Somehow, we have to influence our relatives and friends and neighbors about what is going on. Too many of them are not getting the truth. Just as we make sure our elected representatives know when we want them to vote for or support particular issues, I think we can somehow "primary" those R elected officials if they don't start standing up for our rights.
Why am I suddenly being charged for Letters from an American? What is Garamand and the audio version of HCR letters from an American suddenly in my email. I never asked for it. ICan I simple subscribe to HCRs Letters from an American?
If folks are interested, one of my favorite series, called The Band of Brothers by HBO covers the Battle of the Bulge, with the input of the actual soldiers who fought in WWII, specifically Easy Company, whose sparse numbers held the lines at Bastogne against the Germans. The episode that specifically covers Bastogne is titled the same thing, and is number 6 in the series.

Sobering reflections to say the least.
I am horrified by where we are headed so quickly. Why are so many living with their head in the sand?
You know why. It's easier to do that than to face what's happening.
How do we say "Nuts!" to Trump-is there any way?
The Courts

The Constitution, Courts, Congress.
Let's hope so-looks promising...
"Hope is the thing with feathers".
Hope is not a tactic.
But it's a prerequisite if people want to resist Trump's autocratic actions. There are encouraging signs - the many lawsuits that have emerged and the polls showing how unpopular some of these orders are with ordinary Americans.

Thank you for all the info. Sad to hear that everything that my father and uncles fought for has been torn down.

Fabulous and horrifying
