$787,500,000 - Fox settlement to Dominion

Over One and a Half Billion dollars.

Lying and other shenanigans is getting expensive these days.

...and most of that money comes from where? The MAGA faithful.

A fair amount was hoovered from the pockets of US taxpayers.

No one is mentioning Tim Mellon who financially backed Abbots string of wire. It was all right for Tim's Grandmother to come to this country from Ireland to marry Andrew Mellon. Expand full comment

"enabling by right wing Scotus"--the abominable trifecta: Buckley (1976), Bellotti (1978), Citizens United (2010). When the Democrats control The White House and Congress, legislation to overturn these decisions (perhaps requiring an end of the Senate filibuster) that destroyed over a century of political reform and legalized bribery should be of top priority. Include a reference to Article III, Section 2, Clause 2 of the Constitution: "...the supreme Court shall have appellate Jurisdiction, both as to Law and Fact, with such Exceptions, and under such Regulations as the Congress shall make." and tell the Supreme Court: Hands off! This legislation is passed outside of your jurisdiction. Perhaps followed by the creation of a permanent Standing Committee for the ethical oversight of the Supreme Court and changing life-time tenure of the "Justices" to fifteen years. (Allowing a second term might encourage good behavior.)

Your comment made me LOL. Thanks for that.

Expand full comment

Progwoman: legal fees have been paid by this PAC, the RNC and his donors. ThatтАЩs probably the only way Trump gets lawyers.

Expand full comment

There are also mandatory court costs (eg, ~8,000 pages of transcripts), plus the fees for the monitor and the compliance officer. Then there are the fees for the defense's expert witnesses who charged $950-1,400 per hour for hundreds of hours of work, and, last but not least , there's the little matter of the attorneys' fees. To the latter two groups I say good luck seeing a dime.

It will be interesting to see what happens to family harmony now that DJTJ and Eric each have been fined ~$4M as ill-gotten gains from the sale of the Old Post Office but sister Ivanka, can keep her $4M because of something called tolling.

Expand full comment

...and don't forget all the bank overdraft fees he undoubtedly occurs!

Expand full comment

Overdraftfees..? Those are only things mortals pay while shuffling an overdue credit card payment onto a new 'balance transfer' with no interest for 2 years, in order to avoid that 29% interest/usury charge. But, I suppose those paying $4500 per month apartment rental don't have too much of a problem paying for life's simple amenities. So, 29% is no big deal. Meanwhile, the flag waving #45 supporter living in a 12x70 rundown mobil home, who can only afford the most-basic "amenities" at best, will pay that overdraft fee, and the interest, and try their best not to default on that 2 year no interest creditcard loan (cause you know what that will mean 29%!!). Probably no factor for #45 et al.

Expand full comment

I read the judgement and didn't see any mention of overdraft fees. Okay, I did scan a bit as there was no small amount of minutia.

Expand full comment

Trump's lawyers have lawyers and if any of them get stiffed, they all quit until they are paid. TFFG has been using campaign funds to pay for some of his litigation and his sycophants have also been pitching in, but in the end you can bet the lawyers will get paid. He is screwed if he tries to stiff ANY of his lawyers. Of course, he could always opt to represent himself. /S

Expand full comment

HeтАЩs using the RNC coffers and donors like he did the banks! HeтАЩs the consummate fraudster even as he is defending himself of fraud. What idiots these donors are! My god, the redeemer role has so much power over them.

Expand full comment

One the reasons he hasn't been able to get A-list attorneys is that he has a long-standing reputation for not paying his attorneys for the 4,000 plus law suits he's been involved in -- many for not paying his bills! Smart Christopher Kise, who is a B+ guy (or was until the taint of Trump rubs off on him) demanded $3M upfront before he would agree to take the engagement.

Expand full comment

Another issue is that most of the major and even minor law firms have conflicts of interest with Trump or Trump, Inc. so no one in the firm can represent him -- not that they would want to. Besides not paying his lawyers, who wants to admit they "tried" to represent Trump or worse that he stiffed them.

Expand full comment

Yup. Then there's the little issue of him being THE worst client in the world! Megalomaniac narcissists and pathological liars do not the best clients make.

Expand full comment

MisTBlu: I think DJT тАЬfiredтАЭ Ronna Romney McDaniel when she said she would cut off GOP funding for his legal fees. But thereтАЩs still the Trump PACs and his small donors. They have all been paying his lawyers. So thatтАЩs how he continues to squirm out of paying and still has representation.

Expand full comment

The RNC is in dismal financial shape because of Trump. It will hurt campaigns this fall. Boo hoo.

Expand full comment

LOL

Expand full comment

McDaniel cut off RNC funding for Trump's legal bills when he announced his run for president, as she had promised. That's one of the reasons he wants her out. The RNC paid ~$2M on the theory that some of the suits were politically motivated.

Expand full comment

That would be enough for The Don to go after her. Oh, and sheтАЩs a woman.

Expand full comment

I doubt it has anything with her gender. Trump absolutely cannot handle anyone, male or female, who tells him no.

Expand full comment

I would argue that there is a special place in TrumpтАЩs amygdala for uppity women.

Expand full comment

Pardon me for being skeptical, but I doubt very much if Trump will pay anything at all in fines. He is a huge fraudster, but I doubt heтАЩll ever see the inside of a jail cell. Justice is a shaky concept in the USA. As Trump demonstrated with his presidential pardons of convicted criminals, lots of people are above the law in the USA.

IтАЩm wondering if, being forced to sell a property or two, couldnтАЩt that expose some former wrong doing or other financial detail from a previous transaction? The only way Trump made it out of the last crash of 2007, was dark investments loans and sales and licensing deals from PutinтАЩs oligarchs via Deutsche Bank. Could a sale expose just a little of that sparking a wider investigation? I can only hope!

Lynn, IтАЩve been wondering that too. IтАЩd like to see a list like the one David posted that enumerates the cost of all the investigations into J6, the cost of all those 61 lawsuits about the 2020 election, the cost of the time congress devotes to this like the cost of the second impeachment and the J6 committee, the costs of all these lawsuits against Trump, etc etc etc - all those costs that we the people are paying for.

Although unfortunate, it's a cost well worth bearing, as these various investigations and trials have necessarily exposed him and his grotesque misdeeds against our country and citizens.

Not worth bearing if he ends up cheating/sliding his way out of it. He'd better bear the consequences!

True. I'm not sure how he can/will, but if it's possible he'll at least find a way to delay. I wonder what happens if he dies before he pays off his legally-incurred debts -- is his estate still responsible? Not sure of the answer, but I hope so.

It's not enough. A few hundred pounds of flesh might satisfy me. Not only am I livid at Trump, his family, and his enablers, I am livid that the idealism and mutual respect this country's residents had is shattered.

I retain faith that the pieces can be glued back together, but that will take years. Will I still be alive? My health and my lucky genetics say, "likely", but a calmer retirement with few worries about our kids' futures is still a ways away. A successful trouncing of MAGA in 2024 will go a long way in allaying my worries.

On a positive note, Navalny's murder may help isolate MAGA maniacs more. Speaker Johnson's comments might be about supporters of Putin within Congress, but also about Trump's continued losses in court. Trump is toast, though the toaster isn't hot enough for me
