Steve Bannon, who is a creep but also a reliable indicator of what the authoritarians think they are doing, has said that the point of the book bannings and such is to recapture the suburban moms who had left the Republicans in the recent elections.
I do think it is also meant to assert power over what worldview comes through during kids' education. Our young people, as a whole, are clearly more empathic and more progressive than the rest of us. The attack on schools is meant to change that.
