Thank you for your reporting!

Help me stop Marsh Blackburn from being Governor in Tennessee, I need some ideas in how to stop this atrocity!

Would you prefer Pete Hegseth?

justjulie's avatar

I’d rather have a competent Governor, your suggestion doesn’t apply either.

Thank you, I apologize. My last response was an attack and I made an assumption, I didn’t make an as out of you, only me!

No need to apologise. I sympathise with your predicament. It's one that I fear many Americans will face at this year's midterms.

Rise. We have protests to do. Good trouble. 100 signs free.

Trump is attempting to assert himself as a dictator, of that there can be no doubt. He seems to be following the Russian and Hungarian model of changing the system to have an authoritarian, sham democracy. We may still vote, but it's meaningless to change anything. The best I can tell you is don't comply and resist this with everything that you have. I'm from Los Angeles and we have been doing that here.

I think we should also use this as a sign that the system itself is broken and undemocratic. It is allowing for this, and it already gives disproportionate power to an undemocratic Supreme Court and Senate. I firmly believe we need a news system. Think as well, why can't democracy expand into the workplace? A unicameral, equally apportioned legislator? It should.

Anyway y'all. please help a struggling writer out and subscribe. Sorry to plug.

President Trump's basic objective is to reward good behavior : stay sober, get a job, be productive, get married ,have children, obey the laws. And punish bad behavior : harm others, depend on others to support you.

Trump thinks whatever HE wants to do anywhere is ok but what he doesn’t understand is that the White House will Never be his it belongs to the American people

Professor Richardson, I detest as much as anyone the usurpation of power that the authoritarian Donald Trump has undertaken. Your statement today that he has “no power to change the timing of the U.S. Census, which is mandated by the Constitution to take place every ten years" is correct as to Trump. However, I don’t believe the Constitution mandates that the Census take place every ten years. The text is: “The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.” I believe that this gives Congress the power to decide when the Census is to be taken and that it must be taken at least once every 10 years, but Congress could pass a law which the President would have to sign that it be taken every 5 or 7 years, for instance. That 18th century document recognized the difficulty of conducting a census, but with 21st century technology Congress could determine that reapportionment should take place more often.

Russell John Netto's avatar

The reference to 'manner' in the wording, under the usual rules of statutory construction, would not be interpreted as a reference to the timing of the Census. In any case, Congress has passed no such law.

Rayman Solomon's avatar

It’s the word “within” that makes the point I was making.

I see, but that still only allows for a single Census within every ten-year period and the last one was published on 1 April 2020. That Census is reported to have cost over $13.7bn so it seems unlikely to me that Congress would vote for more frequent counts.

Heather safe travels, always!!!

you wanna laugh, I finally posted two articles of mine, and I've been saying I have no idea about what kind of staff i'm going to need as my fellow Americans get on board with me. I now see I need an editor and a Jack of all trades to assist with everything else. I butchered the second article terribly, like I was an illiterate. But I used my phone, which I despise typing on. I feel like I have purpose in life again, thanks to you and the other Podcasters which your podcasting inspired me to begin. Much appreciated to you!! Thx

How would a nation plan for future territories and states without a complete census? No taxation without representation was apparently intrinsic of the language in the Constitution.

D4N's avatar

If that's so, how do they get away with no representation in states like Ohio, Florida, N. Carolina, etc., where the gerrymander has gone on for decades, leaving opposition voters feeling helpless ? Are we overdue for righteous revolution ?

When you say "Trump has no power to..." you must have your eyes closed. He is backed by billionaires and has every government department and agency to use as he wishes with Congress grovelling at his feet. "Oh please sir don't primary me." Fair elections are no more.

We now live in a dictatorship. Greed, corruption and complacence got us here.

This country of ours has gone down a dangerous and likely perilous path. The divisions are so complete it is hard to think we will ever recover.

Thank you for all your hard work, astonishing research and ability to write and produce videos with unreal rapidity. This is off topic from today's post- I just viewed Jeffrey Sach's presentation to Europe in February in which he outlined the history of USA foreign policy. Sach admonishes Europe to form their own foreign policy, open our eyes to Netanyahu and Israel, find a way to work peacefully with Russia and that China is not an enemy. What are your thoughts about his talk, and the view of Trump from this context. It makes the Trump administration's immigration policy and attempts to further consolidate power in the Executive Branch seem ever more sinister as these efforts have nothing to do with making the world a better place.

How can we, ordinary citizens, make a difference when Trump has the Supreme Court in his pocket? I feel helpless!

We can sure as hell, raise a ruckus and make the effort.

Thanks Michael Moss for reading the newsletter. You shared a truth, protesting does help. Braun decided against gerrymandering the gerrymandered gerrymandering districts at this time. Time will tell if it holds. Braun usually capitulation.
