The right to vote was never simply about casting a ballot. It was about whether women were full citizens with the right to consent to the government under which they lived.

What’s impossible to ignore is how quickly women’s rights are being stripped away. We’ve watched them chipped away piece by piece, and now people with real political influence are openly talking about taking away a woman’s independent political voice altogether.

We’ve already had that America. Women fought like hell to leave it behind.

Steve, I suppose I would be remiss in my role as community reminder if I didn't suggest that you look to Christianity – especially evangelicalism – for your answers.

Although we correctly assert that the U.S. was NOT founded as a Christian nation (contrary to evangelical claims), we do ourselves, and our democracy, a disservice if we don't acknowledge the outsized influence Christianity has had on our governance.

Christianity has its roots in the Hebrew Scriptures, aka The Old Testament, which reflect the strident patriarchy of the ancient world. Followers are admonished relentlessly to subject women to the will of men, no matter how vile they may be.

Jesus (not his real name) is described as "a descendent of the House of David." This is the Old Testament King David, who was born into Jesse the shepherd's family and played a harp. Seems like a nice boy. Then he became a war hero (if one believes the legend) by taking down the Philistine Goliath with his slingshot. This led to David's becoming wealthy and eventually his rise to the Israeli throne. It's not clear whether wealth or the power of the throne corrupted David, but his list of crimes rival those of Bibi Netanyahu and Donald Trump. Yet Christians give David a pass because he is alleged to be Jesus' ancestor.

The biblical Gospels supposedly tell the story of Jesus, but they were written at least 100 years after Jesus lived, so might be taken with a grain of salt. Christians would have us believe that Jesus was an advocate for women. Yet he was cool with a prostitute washing his feet with her tears and hair, dousing them with perfume. On another occasion, he told a woman caught in adultery to "go and sin no more." Apparently, nobody hauled the guy she was sleeping with in front of Jesus to receive the same judgment.

Editorial note: Evangelicals are obsessed with sex.

Later in the New Testament, we have religious-fanatic-turned-missionary Saul/Paul telling women to "keep silent."

For a couple thousand years, Christianity has been telling women they must be subservient if they want to go to heaven. Given that at least 85% of Trump's base are evangelicals and/or christian nationalists, it's not difficult to understand why those women accept the notion of letting their men decide who governs.

You make the point indirectly that the E.Jean Carroll lawsuit was very much about women's rights. The male need for dominance gets really nasty and stubborn. The realization that they need women, come here via women and are nurtured by women who have their kids- is a stubborn fact though. We needed all those amendments and still it's a fight not over. How stubborn. Trump ( and his boys) and Hegseth are the poster boys.

"And we will fight like hell..."

I am seeing all these kinds of comments today. Someone answer please when Americans have fought anything "like hell" in the past 10 or so years.

It is significant that the erosion of women's rights started with the overturning of Roe v Wade. This was no surprise. The Christian Nationalists in collusion with the Catholic agencies worked diligently and openly to overturn this right to a woman's bodily autonomy. Where was the "fight like hell" on this? Losing the right to vote next was always the plan.

Frankly in the reality of the erosion of every right we have such as the fact of concentration camps in America, an armed militia terrorizing and murdering citizens at will, the loss of our economic power, our right to taxation with representation, our healthcare diminished or gone, our food unsafe, our right to vote.....

Now? Now? Americans will "fight like hell"?

I sincerely doubt it.

We should have been in the streets years ago.

Gayle Cureton's avatar

WE WERE IN THE STREETS YEARS AGO! DO YOU NOT REMEMBER THE WOMEN'S RIGHTS MARCHES IN 2017 TO PROTEST THE INAUGURATION OF TRUMP? 100,000 SEA OF PUSSY CAT HATS COULD NOT BE MISSED!

Barbara Mullen's avatar

First of all. Why are you screaming? Forums are for discussion. It is not a group think situation. I realize I am pushing buttons. It is deliberate.

Secondly. That march was 9 years ago ma'am.

How did a one-time march with cutesy hats stop the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022? Marches are designed to bleed into activism. They are supposed to represent a movement.

Being in the streets takes concerted, consistent and effective effort.

Again. I do not see Americans responding much at all while every single constitutional right is being slowly eroded to the point of looming extinction.

Google. estimates there are more than 10,000,000 registered women voters than men in the US. So, if there is only one vote per household and women can't vote, millions of households would have no right to vote.

Imagine a world where brain-dead Republican men are in charge, while their partners just quietly allow them to rule. Meanwhile, all of the well qualified women elected to various government positions would become ineligible to serve.

But, hey, bring it on. Make it a major pillar of the 2028 Republican platform. Hopefully, it will hasten the death of the Republican Party.

Ruth, as I read HCR's Letter, I was struck by the fact that since its inception, SCOTUS has had a history of being wrong on several important issues. The Court's wrongness is built on the foundation of the wrongness of the legislators who created it.

Creating a Court that sits high above every other branch of government, giving its benchwarmers lifetime appointments, and establishing no Code of Ethics and no means to enforce the code, those legislators overturned a whole truckload of wrong.

The GOP is already dead. It died sometime in 2024 with the election of Trump. What took its place is the Party of Stupid and Hate. Starting in 2026 that too shall shall die.

Dale Rowett AR OK VA PA NY's avatar

Merrill, I think how one defines "die" affects how one establishes dates. If dying is defined as a process, then I submit that the process began in 1968 when the Republican Party chose Richard Nixon as their presidential candidate. The party began its gradual descent until 1980 when they brought forth Ronald Reagan, who accelerated the party's descent toward death. George Bush 2.0 marked the next coronary arrest. In fact, July 16, 2024 is the date when the Republican Party was pronounced dead, when the party declared that their platform was "whatever Trump says."

Are the misogynist politicians going to twist themselves into pretzels saying that the oldest male in the household is the head, even if he isn't the one supporting the family? Such jackassery shouldn't even be mentioned behind closed doors, much less widely in public and accepted by too many.

Ligia, that's what makes this whole white male supremacist push a pile of crap. Just like so much of that white male supremacist BS, it is not thought out, it is just a white male wet dream that should be called out for what it is at every opportunity. Maybe those who are proposing it should be told that their idea is something a male 3-year-old would come up with if they knew what a household was. Such men think their brilliance is so absolute they never have to actually think anything through, so they don't, and prove their incompetence every time they open their mouths. Alas, there is too much reverence for such men in our society that they are rarely questioned on their BS. That needs to change!

In all of the insanity of the MAGA flood-the-zone strategy, the impacts of the loss of abortion rights and denial of gender affirming care, and the implications of the fetal personhood movement have been submerged.

Those issues need to be brought back up out of the depths because they strike at the most fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

There’s a mental disorder called Dependent Personality Disorder, in which the sufferer is terrified of making decisions (and it’s usually a woman) and constantly defers to others (usually males). I wonder if this is at play in some cases? Certainly in many cases it’s B3: Biblically-Based Brainwashing.

It seems the more history somebody knows about the right to vote, the more likely they are to exercise it. Americans have fought for, killed for, died for the right to vote and so many Americans still can’t even be bothered to do it. Maybe the right wing effort to disenfranchise so many voters will serve to remind us of its importance. But it’s a damn shame we need a reminder.

J L Graham's avatar

It seems as if the current regime appeals to an era before the Declaration of Independence or even the Magna Carta in embracing autocracy. For all of their contradictions, the official precepts of our American way of governing the founders signed off on radically expanded distribution of universal rights and power, and we have expanded on and refined those principles since. Never without opposition of course. Predatory behavior is always an option, and did not simply stop with a declaration of unalienable rights; but the founders might have chosen to crown their own king, and did not. This was not simply, meet the new boss, same as the old boss. It wasn't Utopia, but is WAS different, and the world took notice. Naturally, those who would be king never just melted away.

"It is the eternal struggle between these two principles -- right and wrong -- throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time, and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity and the other the divine right of kings." - Lincoln

And struggle we must.

"I have wanted to give Iraq a lesson in democracy - because we're experienced with it, you know. And, in democracy, after a hundred years, you have to let your slaves go. And, after a hundred and fifty years, you have to let your women vote. And, at the beginning of democracy, is that quite a bit of genocide and ethnic cleansing is quite okay. And that's what's going on now."

Let's try not to go back to the suffrage efforts of Anthony and Stanton, though, who made the case that white women should have had the vote before Black men. Universal suffrage is the goal and we can demand and vote for everyone's civil rights at the same time.

''Republicans Have Discovered a Problem With Voting: Women Keep Doing It''

After 106 troublesome years of female citizenship, Christian nationalists have a solution: let your husband handle the democracy.

America has apparently been doing democracy wrong since 1920.

For more than a century, women have been walking into voting booths, making up their own minds, and casting ballots without first checking with the nearest husband.

Some Christian nationalists would like to correct that oversight.

Pastor Doug Wilson has argued that the Nineteenth Amendment was a mistake and favors household voting, where the household gets the vote and the husband ordinarily casts it.

At last, freedom has been streamlined.

This is an odd position for a movement that never stops talking about individual liberty. Government must not tell you what to do. Personal freedom is sacred. Americans must resist tyranny.

Unless, apparently, you are married and female.

Then perhaps your democracy should be handled by your husband.

The timing is almost too perfect.

On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the decisive state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment. Representative Harry Burn cast the deciding vote after receiving a letter from his mother urging him to support women’s suffrage.

A mother helped persuade her son to give American women the vote.

A century later, some men would like Mom to give it back.

And this is not merely some obscure theological argument. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has associated himself with Wilson’s church network and reposted material featuring pastors opposing women’s suffrage and supporting household voting. His spokesperson later clarified that Hegseth supports women’s right to vote.

Reassuring.

Apparently we have reached the point where the Pentagon occasionally needs to confirm that the secretary of defense is still okay with women voting.

Christian nationalism often presents itself as a return to traditional American values.

That depends on which America you want to return to.

Women already lived in an America where husbands held enormous legal and political power over them. They spent generations fighting their way out of it.

The Nineteenth Amendment was not a historical mistake.

Women are citizens. Citizens vote.

And if your political vision works better when millions of citizens have less political independence, the problem is not women voting.

The problem is your political vision.

Why have women allowed their rights to be chipped away? Women stood by for years while people opposing abortion openly went after Roe v Wade. Why did women sit on their hands when their right to bodily autonomy was stripped away? Roe was always about more than abortion. It was about the right for women of all ages to make decisions about their bodies. The right to vote was always next.

Why are the candidates most for women's rights barely winning? As long as people continue to support the centrist Democratic Party, we remain in danger of losing our right to vote. This is the part of the Democratic Party that has been there the whole time America is now under a fascist Government.

And I started with Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah a furnished rental apartment when we first moved to California from Florida with a three-year-old son and a Datsun B2 10 with to our name.

We came with nothing and we worked our asses off 80-90 hours a week in developing businesses and success stories. Not to mention, created the largest Number of new businesses in California than any other chain in the country right there in Los Angeles County.

Because you’re only two reasons that you’re here. What is that you’re not in control

You are in control of nothing and when liberals are not in control, they go fucking apeshit and are out of control. Tied to that complicating it even more is it Donald Trump is in control and you hate that with a passion that is unimaginable when we call that in many circles malicious envy or malicious jealousy.

Now the second reason that you’re here especially people like you, Rhonda it’s because misery needs company. And you’ve got 2 1/2 more years to be miserable

Rhonda Hubbs's avatar

Thanks for the belly laugh. You certainly didn’t disappoint and did exactly what I predicted.

Rick Sender's avatar

Rhonda, you again qualified as a Blow average liberal let’s see insult, unsupported, insult, unsupported accusation and how would you possibly come up with an assessment like that without any kind of backup support evidence proof etc. you know that’s how America works otherwise I could say things like hey Rhonda, how did you enjoy your time on epstein Island? I heard you were with both boys and girls. See, I could say things like that too, but without proof for evidence or fact or back up, it would be hard to convince people certainly hard to convince a court. So do yourself a favor if you’re gonna make ridiculous, outrageous, and ignorant statements like that make sure your brain is engaged before you put your mouth in gear

Rhonda Hubbs's avatar

Rick, I love that you are so triggered by truth and people wiser than you. Your master is down in the polls to 32% approval and Democrats are winning popularity by leaps and bounds. The tide is turning as people are waking up by the millions as they see negative impacts to their lives. It’s going to get worse the longer trump stays in office. Even our troops are seeing the deterioration. The illegal war is costing us $1 billion plus per day. The national debt is soaring. Meanwhile trump continues to enrich himself and his crime family by $ billions and lots of it coming from foreign sources. Slapping his name all over the place and his vanity projects are abhorrent. He’s destroyed our food safety network, our preparedness for natural disasters, our farmers can’t afford fertilizer so crop yields will be greatly reduced next year, and his ICE thugs are crippling our labor force many contractors and farmers need to provide services and produce. Concentration camps are not America but he has made them similar to those in Nazi Germany. People and children are being crammed into warehouses with inhumane conditions and treatment. Many citizens, legal immigrants and legal visa holding students have been caught up in those as well. He’s heading the biggest cover up of pedos because they are his cronies. He’s been credibly accused of at least one instance of sexual misconduct with a minor that’s in the files that were released. He’s had his AG bring vindictive prosecution cases against innocent people which fortunately go nowhere for lack of legitimate evidence. He has lost what marbles he has ever had. He’s alienated all of our allies so that we are less secure and becoming vulnerable to our enemies, some of which enemies he seems to favor over our own country. Oh and remember he demanded his Congress republicans to not pass the border bill they all had worked on and were happy with so he could campaign on immigration instead of them passing a great immigration reform bill they worked so hard on. Lastly, his health is going downhill fast. He can’t even keep his eyes open in press conferences.

Rick Sender's avatar

Triggered by the truth where the fuck do you think you posted one word of truth in your post holy shit. I think that in your delusion dunning Kruger is the first thing that comes out of your mouth, but for you, I suggest a padded room along with Robert De Niro and Keith Olbermann. I may be a slow I’ll be former MSNBC characters that have been fired and let go and now are floating around and ignorant land. I respond to falsities. Not false titties, but falsities

And you are a win bag of falsities and you don’t even know it because you think your education got you somewhere and guess what got you into theory land. Where facts are nonexistent

How does that song go? Good night my love. You’re a liberal pimple and whether you know it or not the people here or .2% of the Democrat party and their delusion is that everybody thinks like them which is really narcissistic and pathetic just what you choose to try to assign to everybody else that’s all you are and I’m going to tear apart every single word you said that’s a lie. That’s a delusion that’s a fiction. That’s a word you learned from the asshole in front of you who learned from the asshole in front of him and reload it from the asshole in front of her and on and on and Lemonville. And you all of a sudden get cold, and everybody stands up with a brown nose isn’t that amazing

I want to see every woman who is a citizen voting on November 3, 2026; November 7, 2028 and every election thereafter. Voting can be discussed in the home, but no one should vote under duress.

Signe K.'s avatar

I volunteered as an election observer in FL a few years back, and we were trained to look for instances of one person pressuring another in the voting booths (stalls, really). If that happened, we were to alert a supervisor who would intercede. Even in FL! I was surprised.

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

I'd prefer to suggest that voting can be discussed in the home, but not disclosing one's voting intention.

Phil Balla's avatar

Heather today worries about “the degree to which the craziness is getting normalized.”

These are words from her podcast today, Aug. 18, looking at how criminal Donald is shafting long-time democratic ally South Korea in order to placate the dictator in North Korea – who is, Heather also notes, sending 50,000 troops to aid the Russian dictator’s aggression against another democracy, Ukraine.

It is craziness. And it is getting normalized.

Why? Because you lose civilization if your only priorities are money, monopoly or near-monopoly market share for the largest corporations, and mind-defying obscenities of gold gilt everywhere.

We will not be all right until we restore teachers and schools. Not testing.

This means essay writing centered on seeing others as individuals in their cultures. It means remembering how our best novels, memoirs, histories, and other arts feature individuals all facing hurt and complications.

Thugs, cynics, and dictators always elevate money, gilt, and power. We’ve sunk America and the world largely to them. Craziness normalized.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Phil, I also want to see literature, essays, poetry, and more that present community as a great good. Individuals do work through things, but the most successful goals are reached by groups. The women's movement and civil rights both prove that. It seems the white male goal is the success of the individual where only that guy wins. However, the best sports teams are those where the entire team works toward the goal and celebrates together. We need to do more to promote community, cooperation, collaboration, and coalition. Women are pretty good at these, which is probably why white men in power usually undermine them. We women need to work harder to prove the superiority of that approach to life so that we all will benefit.

donna woodward's avatar

Brava, Ruth! Then on to helping those who've integrated caricatured masculine values like competitiveness and militarism, and amassing of personal wealth over sharing, and rivalries over land ownership, to see the light.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Donna, I would love to find ways to ween men and some women from the need for competition, militarism, and utter greed that so many in power exude. I would love to find a spray that could be used in rooms where men gathered to cut down on the hormones and slightly alter their brains to look past the constant rivalry, the need to undermine others, the violence against women and anyone they think is vulnerable, etc. Maybe we just need to get more women and decent men into office and high positions in business at all levels to start to curb the incessant male violence or need to control everyone and everything~!.

Annie D Stratton's avatar

It's not the hormones, Ruth. That is just a lazy way to explain away inexcusable behavior and thinking. This focus on competitive individualism based on power and greed is embedded in our culture, not our biology. But it is a sickness, the kind of sickness that comes out of treating abnormal behavior as normal, and then adopting the same behavior in defense. The majority of cultures still do not live this way if they can choose. It's just that somehow one dominant culture went off the rails, and has spread the cult of greed and power everywhere they have gone. Even as we congratulate ourselves about having democracy and strive for equality, our gains have always resulted in the costs being passed onto the peoples we have harmed and used. We still have not even begun to address our culpability as a nation in that. And now we are concerned because it has been turned on us, who thought we were the rightful heirs of something that was already here before Europeans got here.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Annie, I do believe it is at least partly due to the hormones. Wars occur all over the world and in most societies, women are relegated to some type of second-class membership in the group or citizenship. That is not an accident or caused solely by white male interventions. There may have been a time in the distant past when there was peace among groups and more equality between men and women, but that is not within recorded history. Things were great as long as women "knew their place" and men could fight whenever they needed/wanted to. It seems men do need to prove some kind of manhood no matter who else is harmed by it. That is not to say that there are a large number of men, probably a significant majority who have been able to choose a different life, maybe due to different hormone levels or by fighting those hormones for some level of peace. We have to find ways to stop the massive violence that is found all over the world, especially when men think they are not getting everything they want or will do better if they harm others or want conflict. Maybe one positive related to screen use by younger people is that a lot of guys aren't interested in going to war or committing crimes of violence or other negative pursuits of previous generations. I don't know the answer. It is a conundrum!

Signe K.'s avatar

Ruth, you are right. Annie is also right. It is both culture and biology. Studies have shown that when women transitioning to become men (transgender) are given testosterone, there is a marked increase in aggression (brain/thoughts) and sex drive. This also occurs in men taking testosterone supplements. We also live in a culture that celebrates “might makes right”, which many of us despise.

Phil Balla's avatar

Nice, Annie, as to how "one dominant culture went off the rails."

I think this manifested most evilly in how testing and its narrow IQ conceits took over all the schools. So simple to engineer. Machines (computers) do all the grading. Just a totally humanly empty environment. Or, as you say, a sickness. As Heather says, normalized.

Bill Katz's avatar

And know the cell devices atrophy learning as well.

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

Hm, I like the idea of a spray! It could be passed off as air freshener.

donna woodward's avatar

What incredible ambitions to have, Ruth! A spray would be wonderful! :) It'a a gargantuan task, to turn people away from violence as a way of resolving conflict and competitiveness as the way to establish self worth. I would like to see conflicts resolved by a game of chess or badminton instead of by warfare. The first step is opening minds, which the substacks contribute to. Cheers.

lauriemcf's avatar

Hegseth is such an exaggerated and cartoonish example of this twisted notion of manhood.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Donna, great idea! Maybe the selected players would have to meet several different challenges. The winner would get the medal and go home to try to make life better for his own people. Maybe the loser would have to have a joint government leadership of men and women to govern equally. There are so many options. Unfortunately, men only think of war and destruction and everyone else gets to clean up their mess. And Doug Wilson wants men to rule the house when they can't even clean up their own messes! That is truly nuts and Wilson should be told so!

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

Spot on, Ruth. From time immemorial it's been the midwives who delivered the babies, assisted by the mother's close friends - no male person was allowed in the room. They knew exactly what had to be done. I've seen a facsimile of "The Christian Midwife", a 17th century German handbook (with illustrations) of the entire procedure, with and without complications.

Phil Balla's avatar

your comment about civilization triggered a memory about 'civilization', phil, involving Gandhi...stop me if you've heard this one before...

when Gandhi returned to England as the Mahatma he was greeted by a number of news people...one of them asked him, obviously not knowing that he was educated there, 'so...what do you think of civilization?' and Gandhi replied, 'civilization, yes. that would be nice'.

i'm in full agreement all these years later...have a good one, Mr. Balla. i'm going to sleep...

I gave my 😆👹3 3 minute speech at the board of education last evening. I recounted that New Zealand and France do not allow cell devices in schools. I believe you gave me those leads and thank you.

Anne-Louise Luccarini's avatar

Correct, and in France a law has just been passed banning all social media for under-15-year-olds.

Rick Sender's avatar

Hey Phil, what the fuck are you doing? Worrying about South and North Korea are you fucking kidding me. Yikes you know nothing about American politics and your meddling and Donald Trump is heading South Korea, Korea, and North Korea Korea when you don’t know a fucking thing about the background information or anything about the factual stuff going on there. The president made a decision just like Biden made a decision to open the border and then lied to you about it. I didn’t hear you complaining then and that was about America not about a country 12,000 miles away. That will never impact your life.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

OMG, Rick, do you actually pay attention to anyone except those who see the world exactly as you do? Insulting folks is so white male, so I suspect you fit that category. Alas, I am guessing no hope here.

David Ronnow's avatar

If Donald Trump took a dump in Rick’s front yard, Rick would find the words to glorify it and make it a national treasure. Assuming he has a yard.

Rick Sender's avatar

And by the way, Ruth I pay very close attention, detailed detention, and when somebody lies distorts re-create a fantasy or fiction or tries to put words and other people’s mouths so that they repeat them then I take exception. And I voiced that exception, knowingly and purposefully Now, do you have anything else to say other than your ignorant fantasy land that only white folks insult other people?

Being fluent in Spanish written and oral and have spent time in many Spanish-speaking countries I have myself witness in fact, people of color believe it or not insulting other people No, really I actually have Witnessed that myself. Isn’t that incredible? Do yourself a favor Ruth Like I say change the channel go see the world and grab a life stop wasting yours in misery Which is of course, why you’re here because misery needs company

Rick Sender's avatar

Insulting people is so white world. ? So I guess you’ve never left the plantation is that what you’re trying to tell me ? People insult other people who ostensibly deserve the insults by their primary commentary And then the insults become a defense posture, indicating at the stain for the commentary that was made

And it also indicates to me that you have no clue at all about the world around us absolutely none Because people all around the world, insult other people, people of all colors, creeds, races, genders, upbringing, backgrounds, etc. So I would suggest you get out of your cave and go visit the real world

I’m here for the purpose of awareness and I don’t take insult very readily No matter who they come from, no matter whether or not I know the color of their skin or their gender or the ethnicity or where they come from It is of no consequence

So my poor dear, you really should get out more go see the world like I have Like my wife and I have Then perhaps you’ll expose yourself to a little bit of reality IN TODAY’S REALITY, NOT IN ANCIENT HISTORY

Rick Sender's avatar

The only craziness Phil is right here right here in the middle of this morass of political liberal insanity. Hard to find a irrational thought amongst the entire bunch.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

Or, Rick are you just a white male orchestrated bott made up of weird insults? Hmmm!

Rick Sender's avatar

I don’t know . I don’t think the insults are very weird. I think they’re very direct and appropriate How’s that? you feel better now or worse. Do you know what the definition of a racist is , there Ruth.

In today’s world there are actually People who believe there’s a difference in the races.. obviously you’re one of them. Which is really sad because that’s a real ancient philosophy. I certainly Am not a follower of talk like that and I actually take Umbridge accordingly.

I am a citizen of the world like everybody else equal in every way And assuming you from and live in the United States we are all born equal and have the same opportunities for success as the next guy or a girl

Now, if you have some information that lies my commentary, I would be more than happy to hear So I could readily dismiss it factually.

Otherwise, I would I would cease with that kind of rhetoric because it doesn’t. Do you know good to be labeled as a racist.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

It took women. It will take women again. History has shown that it always takes women.

Signe K.'s avatar

It takes all of us together.

Pam Taylor's avatar

Cat Cat, when I think of all the sacrifices, all the threats, all the jail-time served, and all the dangers those brave women faced so that women can be heard today, I want to cry at how people like Hegseth are disrespecting and diminishing their efforts. Their courage and determination to enable women to cast their views in a vote helped shape and further our democracy. Narrow minded people are now trying to dismiss, erase their work, and tear our democracy to shreds.

cat cat's avatar

My mother did not have her own name. She was Mrs. (My father's name). She could not have a credit card or take out a loan in her name without his permission and his signature. We can NOT go back to that.

Pam Taylor's avatar

Cat cat, I was single for 12 years after my divorce before I married again. My checks had my name on them, and when I got married, I was told that I should have Mrs.....,instead of MY name. No way.

cat cat's avatar

In the 19th century, women were frequently institutionalized for expressing independent religious or political views, challenging male authority, grief, or "eccentric" behavior rather than verifiable mental illness. Having no real means, ie. job opportunities or educational opportunities, no property, voting rights...you were owned. In 1864, after being commiitted by her husband, Elizabeth Packard challenged her committment. After defending her sanity at trial, Packard campaigned to ensure the rights of the mentally ill as well as those of married women. She publicized the story of her hospitalization at the hands of her husband in order to prevent the abuse and neglect of others vulnerable before the law. It took a woman.

cat cat's avatar

Historically, both laudanum and Valium were disproportionately prescribed and marketed to women to treat the societal and physical stresses tied to gendered roles.

Pam Taylor's avatar

cat cat, all this speaks to how unconscionable it is for wanting to put women back in these conditions.

Janice Darling's avatar

There is no way in hell that we women or at least most of us) will go back into the cave of ignorance, subjugation and obedience to a set of values which negates our integrity and personhood. Try to do so and you will see why women are the ones chosen by nature to carry life into the next generation--we have the grit, the commitment and the strength to do so.

Rick Sender's avatar

And why do you think you’ll ever have to do that? Suffrage is an ancient civilization issue. It has no bearing on today zero bearing on today Jesus do you guys push back on any bullshit at all?

Frank Mitchell's avatar

You don't have the guts to use your own name, you phony.

Rick Sender's avatar

And you shouldn’t call people liars unless you know they are. It’s not nice… very unprofessional. And it’s also ignorance to do something so foolhardy.

Most of the people here for one specific reason because they didn’t get the accolades and financial rewards that they thought they would get what their Advanced degrees and what I see here many times is what I call malicious jealousy. Followed by unsupported and unsubstantiated accusations, like the one you mentioned above. Next will come the sixth grade insults where you can almost hear the giggling in the background. And I’ll save the best for last later.

So have you anything to say?

Rick Sender's avatar

I will answer your question Frank but what was my name have to do with anything but the facts you want to dispute the fact you want to discuss the facts I’m right here, but the liberals don’t know how to find a fact in fact, I’ve said something earlier that I’ll say again to you. It would be easier to find a fact from a dog sniffing another dog’s ass that to get a fact from a liberal. So while you ask circumnavigation questions, what is your real point here? I’ve been here for two years amongst the liberal rubble and I’ve watched the irrational insanity from 2 million gullible human beings well educated I must say but the most gullible human beings I’ve ever encountered.

Now, if there’s something you’d like to discuss on topic, I’d be more than happy to fulfill your wish what you’re doing right now is what a typical liberal does and that is a deflection so I’ll wait for a fact to be presented so I can destroy it because it will be too flimsy to withstand research

Rick Sender's avatar

I will await your answer.

Gloria J. Maloney's avatar

The Senate was more opposed to women voting than the House. The concern was that women's social concerns- child labor, poverty, education, etc. would interfere with and be a drag on business concerns. It was always profits over people.

Virginia Witmer's avatar

Thank you for that information. It makes SCOTUS’ decisions about women (trying to drive US back to the Middle Ages) clearer. Will we ever get to the Enlightenment in America? Will we ever fully embrace “our” constitution?

BLB's avatar

IS more opposed.

All of those things are still issues for the bosses. To this day they are still fighting against family leave because women are the ones that use it the most.

Virginia Witmer's avatar

Yes! Bosses never change until we make them “illegal.”

Frank Mitchell's avatar

That's fascism for sure, as the Germans under Hitler said there were only 3 roles for women -- Kinder, Kirke, Kuchen. Children, church, and kitchen. MAGA philosophy, fascism, must be destroyed.

Ruth Sheets's avatar

It is because a bunch of whiny white boys are so scared of women and our power and their inability to do so many things women can do and that women are often better at doing the things usually assigned to men, that we need to vote out as many of those whiny white boys as possible. Men like Doug Wilson are pathetic examples of manhood while they smugly push their ridiculous idea of one vote per household, the male vote, of course.

He claims he doesn't want to force his will upon the nation and that through chatting and pushing their point women will come to want this as much as he does. Obviously Wilson and his Klan are living on a different planet. Some women have taken to the "tradwife" BS, but others who have turned to the home have done so because they can't stand male bullying at work anymore. How is it men should think they should have the vote in each household when they do nothing to keep that household together? The majority of women and probably most men too are not going to go along with the BS, particularly after women and their male allies had to work so hard to get any rights at all in this nation. Yo Doug, we're not going back. Why don't you choose a better cause to put your whiny white self into, say renewable energy, stopping climate change, ending a stupid personal Trumpian war, working for clean air and water, support for families, affordable housing for all - not just rich white guys, supporting quality public education for all children, and so on. I bet you and your ilk can't manage that because you might appear to be decent human beings. Can't have that!

If these people who want to claim every household gets a vote, they may be forgetting that there are millions of households headed by women with no male involved. Millions more single women own their own homes and fully support themselves. Women make up 51% of the population.

Kris Haagenson's avatar

Women, make your voices heard in November! Don't let the efforts of those early suffragists be in vain. We must not turn back the clock, but instead push forward with the power of our vote.

My mother, born in January 1922, was very aware of this struggle, and was a lifelong member and activist in The League of Women Voters.

She saw this victory for women as empowering and a coming to life of women's power.

She took the responsibility of participatory democracy as a primary value that all citizens should take seriously.

Unfortunately, too few people take their vote seriously enough to gather full information, and disrespect the millions that came before them to fight and win voting rights.

Most of us remember Walt Disney's "Mary Poppins" when it came out in 1964. One part of that wonderful movie was about the perfect nanny and her wild, wacky friends, with low-class chimney sweeps dancing with upper-class children on the sooty rooftops of London.

The other was Winifred Banks dressed in her yellow votes-for-women sash (in America it was white) quietly defying her stuffy husband, in love with money and order, whose world was about to be turned upside down both by his wife and his nanny. We remember "Well done, Sister Suffragettes!" as no less a hit than "Chim-Chiminey-Chim-Chim-Cheroo."

By the way, TC, how are things in LA? It’s a complete shit hole now thank you for the Democrats been in control for how long. ? By the way, he hopped on that train to nowhere yet that costed you billions and billions of dollars a waste of taxpayer money You know I think that officers and government who promised something and then spend the taxpayer money and don’t come through should pay for it in someway shape or form maybe some jail time maybe some financial penalty etc.

I watched a little bit of the insanity tonight. We’re about 50 cars. I guess we’re doing dollies in the middle of the street with hundreds of people watching and the police couldn’t even get to it to stop it.

I saw a auto parts store being ransacked twice to the tune of $50,000 worth of lost Merchandise That’s the beauty of Los Angeles

But let me help you I’ll define it for you a little bit clear the highest cost of living, if not the highest one of the high, Some of the highest property taxes, some of the highest income taxes and penalties some of the highest gas prices and grocery prices, some of the highest crime, some of the highest homelessness And some of the most inept, governmental leaders, they are to allow an entire city along the coast of California to burn to a crisp because of their incompetence Not to mention the financial deficits in supporting illegals before you support American citizens of California

I live there for 30 years in Calabasas at the end what a beautiful beautiful place And now The entire San Fernando Valley it’s a shit hole With homelessness outrageous cost of living. Beverly Hills is almost out of business as I’ve heard so do yourself a favor why don’t you get a mirror and take a long hard look at what you’re trying to protect there and realize what you’re doing. If trump and his sycophants think this has a snowball’s chance in hell, they clearly haven’t witnessed the wrath of women at full throttle. Every. Single. Day brings a chilling and infuriating abomination that seems beyond belief. It is exhausting, but we cannot afford to lose sight of what these people are proposing or how quickly the unimaginable can become a serious threat.

The idea of resurrecting a world in which women would not have the right to vote is unfathomable but we live with an authoritarian dictator at the helm and we have already seen the destruction that can happen. VIGILANCE!

"Now, in 2026, Christian nationalists, whose ideas are powerful in the Trump administration, want to repeal women’s right to vote. They say that voting should be by household and that women must defer to men."

"It’s a plan that seems designed to resurrect the world in which Americans lived before August 18, 1920."

A patient of mine runs a big international business, and he says that things are fast becoming “normal” that would have been unthinkable 5 years ago: unilaterally cancelling of contracts on a whim, raising costs at enormous rates without previously telling so, refusing delivery when a client doesn’t want to pay extra, etc. In his words: “The trust in the business world is gone, along with respect. It’s a dog-eat-dog world now, with everybody in it for themselves, it’s not give-and-take anymore, it’s only ‘take’. Looking for compromise is weakness. But hey, everybody says, if the president of America does it, why can’t we? Or even worse: we _have_ to run our business like that, because if we keep playing fair, we’re going to be outrun by someone else.” In that sense, civilization, as in, civilized behaviour, is already gone. Just look at the “discourse” on social media. And it will take many, many years to get that back - if ever. Trump-style narcissism is now the norm.

That's gloomy news, Mike. Social media! I got out of it years ago when I saw the way it was going. Let's hope that a good example will repair the damage faster than it was made.

Same here. Had to get out social media as I saw how fast it went downhill in the Corona pandemic...
