We have never been at a more dangerous time in the nearly 250 years America has existed. Even during the Civil War, the President was a man committed to preserving “government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. He was not aligned with a fascist (Putin) seeking to destroy America along with democratic nation of Ukraine.

Who will stop this madman … who I fully expect to act on his fantasy that elections are corrupt unless he wins? Who will save our country?

HUGE RED FLAG:   Trump said today he got help from Putin re/ "elections". He said Putin told him that people shouldn't be allowed to vote by mail. 

Rachel Maddow tonight outlined three ways Trump is trying to alter the elections - Demanding changes to maps, demanding a census (as that is how we get Congressional electoral districts), and not allowing people to vote by mail as well as  banning voting machines... Her guest, Garrett McGraff( historian and award-winning journalist) elaborated further that those three tactics would mean everyone would have to vote in person. And urban downtown areas would be filled with ICE agents and National Guard  policing the streets intimidating voters under the guise of protecting them...

Trump takes advice on how to hold an election without really holding one. Putin does not want to lose his puppet. Meanwhile Russia is gloating over the summit meeting, showing pictures of a military vehicle bearing both the U.S and Russian flags. Trump is flailing in the polls. The majority of Americans disapprove of everything he is doing. But as Rachel said in a final warning, "If we lose the ability to vote our leaders out in elections, public opinion will.never matter again..." We know what they are trying to do... Perhaps Newsom will give us inspiration. We have to fight "tooth and nail" every step of the way.

Michele, yes yes yes HUGE RED FLAG. You’re seeing it straight. He said the quiet part on tape: Putin “helped,” and the fix is “no vote by mail.” Then the three-part hustle you laid out shows up like clockwork—rig the maps, mess with the count rules, scare folks at the polls with uniforms. Same movie, new poster.

Here’s the part they don’t want you to remember: a lot of this runs through boring rooms with bright lights. Maps live in state law and courts. You don’t conjure a new census overnight. Mail voting sits in statutes, budgets, trucks, and scanners. Federal troops do not run elections. Intimidation is criminal. Panic is their plan. Discipline is yours.

So you move like a grown adult who knows the rules better than the bully. Bank votes early. Help neighbors cure ballots. Pack watcher seats with trained eyes. Call the DA before the trouble, not after. File the suit first. Keep the hotline hot. Make sure every “show of force” gets met with a bigger show of citizens who know the handbook chapter and verse. You want a chant that cuts through the noise? Try this: everyone counts, no one is above the count.

During the darkest days of World War II, Copland assembled some of Abraham Lincoln's most powerful speeches and set them to music and narration. During the 1950s, for those too young to remember, Copland was one of many artists, musicians, writers, performers and scientists blacklisted and made virtually unemployable during the McCarthy era. I doubt Republicans then knew he was also gay -- for them, being a leftist alone was worth destroying his career.

What lifts my spirits are a protest. We must, must, must wake up. This is not about doom posting, lifting our spirits or philosophy.

I would like to get a link that shows DJT's narcissistic images. It should be seen by as many people as possible. Our election is in trouble and D.C. is under occupation. I feel DJT is close to a breakdown. He is crumbling under the pressure. This is a terribly dangerous time and except for Meadows I do not get much concern from the cable news anchors.

Thank you for the history lesson about Aaron Copland. I was a child during the 50s and politically unaware. I had no idea he was one who had been blacklisted. Of course creeps like McCarthy would have done that to someone so talented.

As Robert Hubbell pointed out today, Trump can make another EO, but it is illegal for him to mess with states, and I don't see Blue states going along with this. The red states probably will, but don't have to.

Linda, I live in Oregon where we have voted by mail for many, many years. Pols here have already spoken against death star's plans. I should also note that there are some here attempting to do this from within and have a petition out to put a measure on the ballot to get rid of it. It works very well with very few problems. I get a notice that the ballot is coming. I get a notice that it has been received and that it is ready to be counted. The postage is paid, so no stamp required.

Linda, you are right about the red states, but they should give it a second and third thought before they go along with Trump's voting interference, which is illegal, but whatever! Trump seems to be able to do whatever he wants to whomever he wants and well, no problem or something! Those "new" Putin rules will be doing harm to a lot of their citizens, even those who are Republicans because those states have very large older populations who are still steeped in the idea of voting as your parents did and that ment super conservative Democrat or just plain Republican (means the same thing). Following Trump's EOs is not smart since Trump has no clue what he is signing except maybe that moment and only a general knowledge of the title of the EO. His handlers in his toddler pool have to coach him at every turn, even explaining to the wh press who know by now not to ask any real questions, just flattering ones. It is becoming harder and harder to watch this BS clownshow. Now Trump is trying to come up with some BS about meetings between Zelensky and Putin or them and him or something. It is being interpreted by journalists who don't really know what they are talking about. What a mess yesterday was, but it is being played as though Trump was in control when he clearly was not. Ugh!

Trump is able to do whatever he wants because he is aided and abetted by State Legislatures that remain in the hands of Republicans who are drunk on power. We need to vote each and every one of them out as well as voting Trump out. The mid terms are our last chance to save democracy. Trump makes it clear that he plans to make our elections mirror those of Russia so he can remain dictator for life.

Trump is a senile fool showing signs of sinking into classical psychosis. Just aiming for Trump is not enough. It is going to take an electoral purge to right the Ship of State.

Hi Ruth, I am adjusting to being back in the US. I hope I don't need to get on anti-depressants, which is the only way my friend could return without wanting to kill herself, and she is still working here.

I am dealing with my mom's care, sorting out my entire house and getting help to get rid of things so that we can move into a smaller place here. Then, on the way back from the airport my husband told me we seem to have bed bugs. Way to bury the lead. So, I am now covered in welts from the bed bugs and the exterminator is not coming for 2 days. I know these are minor problems that we will solve, and that many Americans do not have the luxury to be able to solve their problems let alone think about Trump, Putin, voting rights, or anything other than getting food and shelter. More is the pity.

Media coverage has become something that makes me say, can we take a look at journalism programs? They are failing us. The selling of all media to big bucks people is failing us.

Here is the summary of the meetings in DC on Sunday from the POV of Politico Berlin, today, translated into English.

"NO SCANDAL, BUT ONLY WOBBLY PROGRESS: What remains of the meeting in the White House are friendly words, but also doubts as to whether we have really come much closer to peace between Russia and Ukraine.

At least it was quite different from February: Trump was friendly and unusually diplomatic toward Volodymyr Zelensky. The latter not only wore a suit (more on that later), but also brought a letter from his wife Olena to Melania Trump, in which she thanked the First Lady for her efforts on behalf of kidnapped Ukrainian children.

But what happens next? After his talks with Zelensky and the Europeans, Trump spoke on the phone with Putin for 40 minutes. He then announced that there would first be a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents before a trilateral meeting with his participation could follow. Zelensky agreed to meet Putin “without any conditions.”

However, there are conflicting signals from the Russian side: Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov spoke of talks at the representative level, which sounds like a lower-level delegation as in Istanbul and would probably bring little progress. Merz, on the other hand, said he expected a Putin-Zelensky meeting “within the next two weeks.”

The concern: Moscow could, as before, feign willingness to talk, but in the end only want to stall Trump and avoid US sanctions while the attacks on Ukraine continue.

“You always have to be afraid,” warns Siemtje Möller in a Playbook podcast interview. “Vladimir Putin is an excellent negotiator for his cause,” said the deputy chair of the SPD parliamentary group.

There is still no ceasefire: Trump again rejected it in front of cameras during his meeting with Zelensky; instead, he wants to work on a peace agreement while the fighting continues. This gives Putin a blank check to continue attacking — as he did, incidentally, during the talks at the White House.

The US and Europe remain divided on the issue: Both Merz and Emmanuel Macron continue to push for a ceasefire. “At the latest” after the planned meeting between Zelensky and Putin, this must happen, according to the chancellor.

Johann Wadephul also warns: “We now need President Putin to be willing to engage in truly substantive negotiations and, above all, to agree to a ceasefire,” the foreign minister said early this morning during a visit to the US naval base in Yokosuka, Japan.

Merz surprised with the comparison that Russia's demand for Ukraine to cede the entire Donbass region was “like the US having to give up Florida.”

Now it gets tricky: We come to the question of possible security guarantees. Trump wants to be involved — so far, so good — but continues to avoid any commitment to send US troops to Ukraine for peacekeeping.

Should our Bundeswehr participate? Merz said he would “of course also have to discuss Germany's participation in security guarantees with the coalition in Berlin, including the question of whether we may have to take decisions here that require a mandate, i.e., that must be taken by the German Bundestag.”

That sounds as if sending German soldiers to Ukraine could indeed be an option. “However, it is too early to give a definitive answer today,” the chancellor added.

Wadephul also reacted cautiously: “What the chancellor said about a Bundestag mandate is only a matter of course. Any possible participation by Germany would definitely require a mandate, but we are still a long way from that.”

Reservist association shows openness: If it actually came to the point “where a peacekeeping force was to be deployed under reasonable conditions, Germany should take the lead and provide the largest contingent,” said Patrick Sensburg, president of the Reservist Association, to the Rheinische Post.

US weapons worth $90 billion for Ukraine: Selenskyj spoke of such a deal, with the Europeans footing the bill. And that would probably mean Germany would have to pay a large share.

Suit up! This time, Zelensky wore a suit at the White House (apparently as requested by the US side), albeit all in black and military-style.

It helped: Both Trump and the same journalist who had critically questioned the Ukrainian president about his outfit at the Oval Office meeting in February were full of praise. Selenskyj even grinned back, saying he had changed his clothes, while the reporter was wearing the same suit as last time — a scene that brought a sigh of relief."

Ah Robert Hubbell I remember him. He was my first paid blog until he banned me when we disagreed over Soviet breakup, the push of NATO east and other factors conceivably affecting Putin’s belligerent attitude toward Ukraine. He could t handle disagreement. Smart man no doubt but he just could t handle anyone opposing him on issues.

Love this - but - I think the most effective safety measure is to globally reveal and then acknowledge that the 2024 election was interfered with by Trump, Musk and Putin, and that Trump did not win and does not have a mandate to govern this country.

If it requires solely international reporting, so be it. And if UN peacekeepers need to be on the ground while we vote in 2026, so be it.

We also must acknowledge, immediately, that the Dems (aka the rest of us) do not have a standing army at our disposal, and that Trump now does. Maybe we can form militias or get some of the military and the police to defect, but they coined the term "Might makes Right" for a reason.

We all need to stop the denial, wake up, and start ORGANIZING like hell.

Putin went to Alaska, and DJT thought that Alaska is part of Russia... Putin made DJT wait, and when Putin walked toward DJT on the Red Carpet that DJT had rolled out for Putin, DJT clapped like a little School-Boy... After the Greeting Ceremony was over, DJT, and Putin rode together in the 'Beast', Putin's own Limo was not used... I'll Speculate that during this time that the Camera's, and Microphones were off, Putin Pledged His Support For DJT In The Upcoming Elections In 2026, And 2028, Like Putin Did In 2016... You really nailed that summary! I keep seeing images of Putin killing children and families - the war crimes are unimaginably gut- wrenchingly sickening. Meanwhile, the true hero, Zelenskyy gets shafted by Putin via his puppet, Trump. On the other hand, we have a woman tonight restrained in a Texas congress building, because she won't sign a "consent form" for state police to monitor her every move .... all because she broke quorum - her legal right... I don't care if I have to crawl to the polls, I will vote... Wouldn't you have loved to hear that "off the record" conversation of Trump and Putin??!!## We fight on...

I knew it would play out as it has and this is why I’m convinced that the once good generals should have taken over by suspending the constitution with a coup. No one agrees but me. So be it. Sometimes you need to destroy in order to save. And the suspension of our constitution would have taken out the treasonous MAGAs. Now the good generals are gone and replaced with Stormtrooper defense secretary. I will not stop fighting in any small way I can. Today I will put a sign up on my door forbidding any census employees from walking on my property. They claim I’m in a regional study that I cannot extricate myself from. I will also add transcripts of Trump raping underage girls to my book. And a signature song I recorded is at least being played for a few record producers so who the hell knows but I will not remain silent.

The folks in Texas holding a woman prisoner because she won't consent to having a brown shirt follow her every move are EVIL! I am only disappointed the others who left Texas didn't refuse to sign the consent form too. Signing such a form should be illegal, and probably is, but with the corrupt judges in Texas, who knows who they would rule for and what stupid excuse they would come up with. Alito has nothing on some of the stupids on courts in the red states around the country.

That is a good question... How cruel would that be if that torture were added to her misery and perhaps fear. Whenever we talk about the Regime's tactics, I think we should mention the fear...She is very brave. She spoke earlier, but I'm so tired I can't remember her exact words...Earlier Rachel Maddow mentioned that these police would be monitoring these legislators, possibly with the motivation of looking for opportunities to arrest them... Heroes and Heroines of these times!

Apache, I know I have said this before, but it is now critical that no president or other high official in our government should ever be able to meet another world leader or high official without witnesses and an American translator present if a translator is needed. This secrecy BS, letting a man with dementia meet with the ruthless leader of a country that currently is standing against our democracy is not acceptable and must be stopped. Congress could do that if it had a will to defend our democracy. I am not sure the Trumplicans do, in fact, I am becoming more and more certain that they do not.

Florida allows anyone to vote-by-mail.When our MAGA county commissioners voted to eliminate funding for prepaid return envelopes on vote-by-mail ballots, as well as funding for mailing sample ballots to all reg voters, We The People including many MAGAS resisted and they were forced to overturn the vote.The MAGA county commissioners who pushed to eliminate funding subsequently lost their elections.

And he ordered the red carpet to be rolled out for the war criminal Putin who started a war that now has over a million casualties and over a thousand more every day.

Timothy Snyder (author of "On Tyranny" and "On Freedom") was interviewed Friday night, Aug. 15 on " The Last Word" on MSNBC. The following are his final words in the interview. He said: "It's clear that Trump's implicit and sometimes explicit version (scenario) of how the war ends is that Ukrainians just give up. That's his scenario. And the Ukrainians can't give up. They didn't want this war - they were invaded. They have to fight because the Russians commit war crimes over all the territories that the Russians occupy. They have no choice.

If Trump wants Ukraine to end it, he has to make Ukraine stronger. He has to give Ukraine the ability to defend itself. That's the way the war comes to an end. And that's a basic geopolitical reality, which I'm sure many people around Trump do understand. The only way for Zelenskyy to end it, is not to surrender. That would just mean more atrocity and future wars. The only way Zelenskyy can end it is if we empower Zelenskyy, if we are on the side of Zelenskyy, on the side of the Ukrainians and help them to defend themselves, to change their power position. That's what we can do. So far as we're changing the power position on the side of Russia, we're making it impossible for the Ukrainians to end the war."

Trump will do as Putin instructs him... He has already shown us that. I wish it wasn't so... Thanks for your post.

Michele2, I have also read the other day Snyder's advice for the European leaders going into the meeting with Zelenskyy. I don't know that they followed that advice. However, the EU and England and Canada back Ukraine 100% and they understand what Snyder is saying. People from the US are so isolated from foreign news coverage because the US press does so little of it.

Trump will not make Ukraine stronger, Ukraine's actual allies will. Trump wants to be part of Putin's club. That is the network of Autocrats that protect each other in being dictators and robbing their populations blind.

I wish the UN would send in a "Peacekeeping" force. Sadly, that body is corrupt and with Russia and the US both permanent members of the security council, they'd vote no. Russia, as one of the involved parties, shouldn't be allow to vote anyway. Are there any provisions in the UN charter or NATO to override a corrupted government's vote? If not, that's a huge oversight. Too often we, as humans, have lofty ideals like respect for one another, cooperation and protection but greed and hatred get in the way.

Kathy, historically letting Russia into the UN security council was a big mistake. There needs to be a ceasefire for the EU and the group of the willing to go in and support Ukraine, but Trump is refusing for there to be a cease fire, so a catch 22 situation.

Zelenskyy has a lot of tenacity, and is the biggest reason why Ukraine is still independent from Russia. He bends over backwards to get help for his country, and European and other countries like Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwann, see the importance of supporting it as a democracy, as all democracies need to be tied to each other.

The good ones are biding their time to submit for an honorable discharge. Until then, I imagine, they are passively going through the motions. It is not up to them to decide illegal and immoral orders, it’s up to the courts and we have plenty of people suing right now. I don’t think they should destroy their lives by being rash.

Kristi and Holman have been complaining that attacks against ICE have increased dramatically under their watch. (10 attacks in 2024 to 79 so far in 2025). ICE has been charging people including US citizens with made up crimes like assault on a officer and resisting arrest. It might be nice to "attack" their government vehicles with paint balloons so they have to hang around waiting for reinforcements (maybe an Uber) to leave the scene or other non-violent actions other than laying down in front of the vehicles.

Tesla showrooms were attacked for weeks when Musk was firing Federal workers and apparently others have as well. And Musk is still trying to rebuild the Tesla brand.

Let me tell you — I didn’t mean to become a whistleblower. I’m just a printer. My dreams were small: spit out a few boarding passes, maybe the odd résumé. But then Trump’s people rolled in and treated me like their personal Xerox Jesus. They fed me State Department schedules, staff phone numbers, a seating chart, a gift list, and a fucking menu. And then — they walked away. They forgot to pick it up.

Do you know how insulting that is? Do you know what it feels like to be handed the keys to the nuclear kingdom, and then abandoned like yesterday’s Chili’s coupon? I sat there humming, my tray full of secrets, thinking: “Is this really the leader of the free world? This clown show? This toddler’s finger-painting of governance?”

Let’s start with that “gift.” An American Bald Eagle Desk Statue. Really? You’re meeting the world’s most ruthless autocrat and your big move is to hand him a tchotchke that looks like it came from the SkyMall catalog between a neck pillow and a chia pet? Putin probably laughed so hard he nearly annexed the dessert cart.

Oh, and the phonetic guide. “Mr. President POO-tihn.” You cannot make this shit up. A cheat sheet for pronouncing the name of the guy whose face has been plastered on every intelligence briefing since the Berlin Wall fell. That’s not diplomacy; that’s a kindergarten spelling test. What’s next — “Ser-gay LAHV-rov. Rhymes with: we’re screwed.”

And the menu. Filet mignon, halibut olympia, crème brûlée “in honor of His Excellency Vladimir Putin.” A dictator’s prix fixe special. Except — they canceled it. Even lunch rejected these idiots. I’ve jammed less often than this administration.

The seating chart was pure comedy. Trump flanked by Rubio, Hegseth, Susie Wiles, Scott Bessent, Howard Lutnick, and Steve Witkoff. A line-up that reads like the cast of a C-list game show called Who Wants to Mismanage a Superpower? Across from them: Lavrov and Ushakov, the adults in the room. It wasn’t a summit. It was a cafeteria table where one kid brought Lunchables and the other brought the launch codes.

And don’t get me started on the pattern. This wasn’t my first exposure to their stupidity. A journalist got texted war plans. ICE accidentally added strangers to a manhunt group chat. And now I’m the star — the business center printer that spilled state secrets. Folks, if you gave these people a USB stick marked “TOP SECRET,” they’d leave it in a rental car cup holder next to a half-empty Diet Coke.

You want to know the real takeaway from the summit? It wasn’t a treaty. It wasn’t a ceasefire. It wasn’t diplomacy. It was me — the Captain Cook printer — standing taller than Trump ever could. I’m just a beige plastic box full of toner and spite, and yet I’ve done more for transparency than this entire administration.

So yeah, remember your headlines: “Trump gifts Putin an eagle.” Wrong. I gifted the world the truth. And unlike Trump, I don’t need a golden chair, a military parade, or crème brûlée to feel important. I just need idiots who forget to hit “Collect Print Job.”

We have no choice! The Republican controlled Congress and the conservatives on the Supreme Court have proven unwilling to exercise the power granted by the Constitution. Trump's Cabinet has the power to remove him under the Twenty-fifth Amendment. None of these institutions, none of the Cabinet officers are willing or capable of taking needed action. We need to keep pressure on Congress. Members who refuse to act should be removed from office in the 2026 mid-terms. They should then be tossed on the junk heap of history!

I have become such a pessimist . . . . we too have had millions protesting on the streets but it simply doesn't move the dial when an evil despot is in power and the rallies are dispersed across thousands of miles. It's not going to happen (we are too large a country in area and population) so unless, until, or when we can get enough people to literally shut down the U.S. economy, the madman and supporters will continue this reign of terror.

For me, at this point, with the weight of my anxiety and deep concern about what is no longer just a story in a book or a new summer blockbuster movie showing what the America of the future might be like, I feel like my annoying, screaming cries of the coming total unraveling of my whole existence are bouncing off the force fields protecting all elected republicans, MAGA faithful, all but a minority of Supreme Court justices, and every voter of his who has never studied our country’s history or, when hearing something t***p says or does that just feels off, doesn’t take the time or expend the energy to at least try to verify what is true, only half true or complete stinking bullshit that defies credibility and truth. We have been standing underneath a roaring waterfall of lies and probably not true claims of foreign country invasions, illegal immigrants collecting taxpayer funded healthcare, Social Security payments, committing violent crimes and terrorizing citizens across the country and voting illegally en mass, and an economic emergency that gives t***p the authority that legally belongs to Congress, to use tariffs to extort countries worldwide to charge tariffs on imported goods that will eventually lead to higher prices to be paid by all of us. I am sure that millions of t***p worshiping fans will march in celebration when we voluntarily give even more of our tax money to his billionaire buddies than we already have. Finally (who knows what illegal action he will take later this afternoon) he is doing his level best to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating “deals” to stop 7 foreign wars and at the same time pave the path for the former United States to be given as this year’s Christmas gift to Putin. Buy your English to Russian dictionary now, while they are still available.

Sorry, I forgot his ordering a new, national census that won’t count immigrants, because the official one taken 5 years ago is “bad” and “the numbers are wrong”, to, in effect, rig the 2026 midterm election in favor of the republicans. In a show of appreciation for eliminating any possibility of Democratic control of any portion of our government in the future, the majority republicans will either alter the Constitution or pass a new law to eliminate the existing two term limit on the presidency.

I know Heather's posts are often filled with examples from our past that help us get through the moment by reminding us that 'we've been here before, and somehow made it through.'

But we've never before seen such a cavalcade of malice, illegality, contempt, stupidity, the destruction of institutions, norms, laws and procedures all happening at once -- with the acquiescence of a political party that's turned itself into a pile of quivering jello rather than confront the beast it unleashed on all of us. And a Supreme Court filled with White House ladies-in-waiting whirring "as Your Grace pleases" on command.

On top of it all, a Russian plant for a president making a 40-minute phone call to his boss in Moscow as the President of France, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, the President of Finland, the Prime Minister of Italy, the head of NATO and the President of the European Council all wait in the adjoining room, thinking Trump was just emptying his diapers.

As Alice once said in "Through the Looking-Glass" while two queens suddenly fell asleep on her lap, "I don't think it ever happened before...no, not in all the history of England."

Thank you. Sometimes history doesn't just "repeat". Sometimes, history breaks out into a new space. (See historian James Burke's landmark TV series from the 1980s, "The Day the Universe Changed". It's possible that the forces organized against global democracy and truth could literally cancel the intellectual progress resulting from The Enlightenment. I believe that is one of their goals.

But none of it means anything without people who are supporting him for their own purposes finally saying no. For instance, I am thinking about the fact that everyone is saying "b-b-b-ut he can't do that!" re: the latest voter suppression idiocies coming out of the Oval Office but if his clown car collection of governors and Congresscritters simply do his bidding, he will effectively accomplish what the Project 2025 goal has always been: the nazification of the USA.

Update: I will remind people that FINAL Judgment in the Newsom vs Trump trial over the HSI-ICE take over LA has not yet been published by Judge CHARLES Breyer. I smell a REMAND Order of control back to Governor Newsom.

There is so much interest in the FINAL Judgment that the the Northern District of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco has dedicated a separate URL for the case.

Recall, Judge Breyer already has a TRO in effect. Yes, Charles Breyer is the brother of retired SCOTUS Justice Stephen Breyer.

I appreciate the sentiment, and I hope decent human beings (as opposed to, say, Republicans) regain a foothold, but for now, Republicans are doing what they please, legal or not legal, and there appears to be no effective way to stop them until, at the earliest, over a year from now. Even then, and even with the best election outcome we can reasonably expect, Republicans will be able to continue run roughshod over decency for another two years after the 2026 election. We should obstruct as much as we can between now and then, but our levers are mighty damn weak at this point in the process.

I have felt weak all summer having to run around in my 4 wheeler looking up with my broken leg as I try to push back with my pitch fork. Tomorrow a new day dawns as the doctor may let me use my leg again. I will be looking down on the bastards from horseback with my pitchfork. Talking a good fight is okay if you need to bolster up. My horse is rude though. Some have suggested that my blue healer bitch is mostly badger. Since I saved her from execution she accompanies me pretty much everywhere. People think I’m crazy at 74 and I don’t dispel them of that notion. They clamber back in their trucks when they see the bitch is loose. Together we are a trio. Be nice if we could be a bunch but people are intimidated when heroics are needed.

Rex, it is not "sentiment" . Our courts are not dead. I filed a VERIFIED complaint on behalf of the totally innocent, Camarillo cannabis farm employee the security guard.

Yeah that right, the disabled U.S. Vet upon who ICE committed a battery. The complaint was filed with the CA AG, ROB BONTA.

Our fellow citizen was jailed for 3 days and, of course, released with NO charge. This citizen has 1 hekuva civil claim against Trump, Bondi, ICE in civil court.

I would be pleased to be called as a witness at the gentlemen's civil lawsuit in federal or state court. My verified complaint could be used as a "road map" for the trier of fact. Hey, Counsel, call me.

PS: AG, Rob Bonta has not quit either.

Well right now they control all three branches of government as well as the media. They commit crimes with impunity- and they are able to get people who stand up to them fired. They have started the process of dismantling the federal government. They have fired huge numbers of federal employees- the non political ones, who do the actual work. They have built concentration camps and are filling them up. And let’s not forget that a majority of Americans voted for this. What else do they need to declare victory?

Strategic suggestions: 1)Take to the Streets. 2)Call and write to Congress members, even if they are R’s. All calls are documented and counted. 3) Contact your county’s board of supervisors. 4) Contact your state representatives. 5) Contact your city council members. 6) Go to town halls, either in person or on Zoom. 7) Get involved with Indivisible, Move On, Swing Left, etc. 8) Become a doer, not a sitter.

One can donate, if they can, money to a candidate you want to support. Maybe you can volunteer for them by stuffing envelopes, knocking on doors, talking to people. KEEP MOVING must be your mantra!

Mr. Reich is entirely too much in love with the "Democratic" (sic) Party, which since the coup of 22 November 1963 enabled LBJ's Tonkin Gulf deceptions has been nothing more than the Fifth Column of the "Republican" (sic) Christonazi/Neoconfederate party. That's why I stopped reading Mr. Reich's site. A far more useful Substack source is Andra Watkins, "For Such a Time as This." She grew up in the enemy camp, came to deplore its evil, fled from it -- literally in fear for her life -- and now writes from an undisclosed European location with the know-your-enemy authority we all need if we're to muster an effective, Sun-Tzu caliber counter-attack against that which is now overwhelming us.

You are going to have to get very involved. to start with you are going to have to regularly contact your elected officials to express your thoughts.

You will donate as much as possible to individual candidates and organizations fighting for issues on the ballot.

You will donate your time by engaging in phone banking or canvasing.

You will recognize that this is war about saving our country. If we lose then say goodbye to our country. This is more than democracy. This is our country - our way of life under attack.

Even though President Zelensky was placed across from Tump, Zelensky never directly faced him. His chair was either angled to the right or left depending on which World Leader he was addressing. He also looked over his shoulder occasionally at the news cameras.

There is absolutely no question what-so-ever that we all are witnessing the fall of the USA. European leaders know exactly what the world is facing. And, it is potentially a global disaster.

While we have been through "tough times" before, eras such as the U.S. Civil War had limited, if any, impact on the world as we were not in a position of leadership. That changed during and after WWII. But in the big picture, our dominance has been a short time. I don't know how we thought it would end, but I don't think many saw a batshit crazy man would or could rip democracy apart from within this quickly.

The Big Picture

This is not simply a president in panic. It is the spectacle of a failing strongman, doubling down on conspiracy and executive overreach as his grip on reality and power slips. He brags of deals while humiliating the United States before Putin.

His decline is obvious. The danger is the routine. Sell “big progress,” skip the paperwork, pose for the grin. Then step out for a forty-minute private call with Putin while Europe waits in the hallway like unpaid extras. That isn’t peace ya’ll that’s the headline special with Costco lighting.

And yep you pay the bill. Tariff taxes hit the register. Power bills creep. Health coverage gets carved up in the states. Producer prices jump. Approval sinks. The math hurts while the smile sells. You all know that trick. It’s the check that arrives after the magician leaves the stage.

Rick, your understanding of the history of the Ukraine war is somewhat deficient. The US gave a pledge in 1994 to protect Ukraine. You clearly don't even know that Russia was party to the Budapest memorandum - it wasn't all about Clinton. Read this and learn.

So, the USA, strongest country in the world militarily, economically, and arguably, culturally, is now pretty much a vassal state to puny Russia because we elected the weakest, most vulnerable to extortion and corruption, man in US history as President. The average Russian lives on less than $8K/ yr (because Putin and the other Oligarchs robbed them blind). The Russian economy is smaller than that of TX, CA or NY (or Italy, or France, or the UK). Far from a "super power", but for their nukes and the powers they inherited from the USSR (ie permanent security council seat in UN), and they would be a mid European nation at best. BUT they do own the man currently in charge of the world's undisputed super power so none of that matters! Putin and Russia now control the world through their vassal, the United States of America.

As I have often repeated, Donald was born with a learning disability, as suggested by Mary Trump. Rather than address it and help him cope, his family covered it up with money.

All of his so-called "success" is due entirely to the efforts of people around him, starting with his nannies, his father, his schoolmates, his company employees and the production staff of the TV show in which he starred. When left to his own devices, he wrecks whatever he touches. I have many nicknames for Donald, but a recurring one is "cardboard tycoon."

Because he is so mentally low-wattage, he has always made bad decisions, including his choice of heroes.

When the existence of his "bawdy" birthday greeting for Epstein came out, I did not see any discussion of what I observed. The greeting was a written expression of hero-worship. Donald thought Epstein was "cool" and wanted to be like him. His written message was a pitiable effort to be close with Epstein. Body language in photos and video clips of the two men show Donald's physical attraction to Epstein.

Likewise, Donald worships and is attracted to Vladimir Putin. His reposting of memes portraying him as a bare-chested, muscular hero is a direct response to the widely circulated photo of Putin, shirtless, riding a horse.

Donald's poor choices get him into trouble, which makes him vulnerable and easily manipulated. Bad business choices put him in spectacular debt that U.S. banks couldn't/wouldn't bail him out of. He had to turn to Putin-connected oligarchs who loaned him the money – with strings.

Bad personal choices got him in trouble with his wives. We don't know all the details, but clearly, Melania is shrewd enough to turn his mistakes to her advantage. Donald's bad personal choices probably got him in trouble with Russian law enforcement, as well. The "pee tape" would depict a consensual situation. Given Donald's history of sexual predation without consent, it's likely this happened in Russia, where consequences would be harsh – were it not for intercession from a powerful benefactor.

Trump is the opposite of everything he claims to be. His life is actually a mess. Without nearby attendants to clean him up and prop him up, he'd be homeless on the street.

I think we have (for now) the strongest military, assume Trump doesn't damage it badly, economically it's been great for billionaires, and culturally? We certainly export our commercial cultural product's around the planet, but is our own domestic culture strong and healthy? It seems to me that we the people are losing a grip on our own culture and that increasingly "our" culture is manufactured by commercial interests. I don't think that is making for a happy society, and I think our distraction is leaving more than one kind of mess for generations to come. I don't think all is yet lost, or that commerce, in and of itself is a bad thing, but I think we are losing our sense of balance.

It's getting worse as the other things that we all had in common (local religious and civic groups, 'must-see television', newscasters that everyone watched and trusted like Cronkite, etc) are waning. The one thing we all as Americans have in common is we are sold to from birth. I wouldn't be at all surprised if more Americans knew certain commercials better than even the most popular music, tv show, movie, theater show, etc.

For sure, I do. But we are taught to balance that (mostly as children) to balance and integrate that with courtesy, friendship, neighborliness, love, etc., mostly boiling down to conscience and compassion. Without such values, narcissism drifts into "evil". I think that is evident.

And also, I think that appeals to narcissism is a sales tool, to sell a product, to sell an ideology. It seems to me that very powerful interest groups are, on a daily basis, teaching us to be narcissistic. That's not unprecedented, but it never ends well.

All true. To speak in humanity's defense: we are all self-contained units. We are all born alone and die alone. I can only sense things in this body so it is very much in my interests to do things that help it and avoid things that hurt it even if those pursuits hurt others. No one else in the world will experience things exactly the same way that I do. Maybe considering this, it's a miracle that we humans even got this far and can cooperate at all. I think the average person is 'good' in that they do have empathy and think of others and not just themselves but there is always a certain percentage of humans who are born without empathy or the ability to understand it. If not raised by 'good' and competent parents, they use this 'ability' as a super power to pursue their own interests even if it runs roughshod over the rest of us. Trump is one of those people I think. Some of his cultist are also that way but I think many of them are just hurt people who think: no one helps me so why shouldn't I vote for this guy who promises to own the libs who I (mistakenly) think are hurting me? As things get worst (more brutal, less caring), it only snowballs and the forces of 'evil' get more power and it doesn't even matter if the majority of people are 'good' or not. We all become just animals trying to survive.

We are certainly animals, and yet even under horrifying conditions Victor Frankel and Edith Eger spoke of those who preserved their dignity. We are complicated animals. We are uniquely individual and sentiently map reality by way of unique, individual nervous systems and at the same time highly interactive, interdependent social creatures. Baby sea turtles hatch on a beach when mama is long gone. We of necessity take care of each other, at least to some degree, learn from one another, and play and work together. An emotionally healthy society produces healthy individuals, and healthy individuals created healthy societies. It's all one thing.

Here’s the part that keeps you powerful. The Guard belongs to governors until it gets federalized. To grab it, he needs the Insurrection Act. That step is loud and litigated. Posse Comitatus still lives. Soldiers are not cops unless the law unlocks that door. And most Guardsmen are your neighbors. Teachers. Nurses. Carpentry hands. Their oath runs to the Constitution, not to a man.

So treat every “dry run” as free intel. Log the dates. Ask for the orders in writing. Demand the rules of engagement. Call the governor’s office and the AG and make them say the limits out loud. Yes, Trump is using fear and intimidation tactics by sending military units into cities without any real need except manufactured and contrived crises. And moreover, the 2 cities that Trump has sent National Guard troops(& Marines) into, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., both have black women mayors. He's even threatened to send National Guard units into Oakland, CA several times recently, which also has a black woman mayor, Barbara Lee. It's obvious that this isn't a coincidence and that Donold is a racist, misogynist, petulant despot, in addition to being one of the most damaging saboteurs & threat to our democracy, usurper of our republic and enemy of the U.S. Constitution that our Nation has ever had to endure.

It is really apparent that they have no trust with the United States and they were there to support Trump and to try and keep him from employing Putin's agenda. The presence of all of the European representatives was not to support the US but to try and keep the US from abandoning Europe.

Trump's delusions as to his role and power and his weaknesses are becoming so apparent that his people are no longer able to hide them. What comes next?

I would not say that he abandoned European democracies but rather ignored them as he is sure that he is superior. I remembered at one time that I confronted him about how he had overpriced some assets and asked him how he justified putting a price of more than ten times his cost. His response was that they had that value because they now had his name on them.

There is little issue as to the Donald's falling into full fledged dementia. The real issue is who are those that are really pulling the strings and what plan do they have. I remember how during the McCarthy era the Republican right was so concerned that the Communist were going to infiltrate the government and overthrow it from within. We are now seeing that happening. At some point Trump is going to be found unable to continue in office the question is how organized and who will be new power base and where will this lead us?

Leonard Leo and his Federalist Society have influenced Trump's decision about the judiciary, which has provided the legal rubber stamp needed to advance the christofascist agenda

Lastly, Peter Thiel and his cabal of tech bros are exerting their influence on Trump.

Now Maxwell is a problem because she's still alive and knows too much. I'm sure Donald would like to change that with a plutonium cocktail or an accidental fall out a window, but he can't because the spotlight is shining on both him and her. We can all be proud of our fellow democracies – the eight Europeans who met today.

We can be proud of them, too, in inverse proportion to how ashamed we have been – long so – of the criminal in the White House so abjectly covering for his pal fellow criminal Putin.

Putin now knows – the Europeans have shown him – his dreams of a restored and expanded Russian dynasty are finished. The Russians are not going to take Estonia and the other Baltic states. Not going to take Poland.

It’s been a costly war for Russia. Its economy is in the toilet. It has lost more than a million young men – a bit less than half of that due to battlefield deaths, a bit more due to the hundreds of thousands who simply fled the country, wanting no part of such an eminently stupid war.

Russia is so weakened now, I look to China to take land grabs above Manchuria. It needs the fresh water which lakes in that region can provide.

He hasn't got anywhere near a peace agreement. What's he has suggested is that Ukraine should effectively surrender to Russia rewarding Putin for an illegal invasion of Ukrainian territory. Trump promised that he would end this war on Day One of his presidency and instead since he returned to office Russia has doubled its bombing raids on Ukraine. He's claiming success when he hasn't achieved anything and he's relying on dopes like you to believe him.

Just one small detail you have omitted, Rick - the government has lost some 90% of court cases challenging its policies, mostly on the grounds that they are unconstitutional. That sounds more like losing rather than winning.

Also, you might have noted that electricity prices have gone up by 10% since Trump took office.

It's no use denying these figures, Rick, because Chris Wright, the energy secretary - a climate denier - has already tried to blame the Democrats for the price rise in a futile effort to deflect blame. And this is exactly what I mean you don’t have a clue you’re talking about. You see people on the ground here in America, especially especially and almost specifically those on the left are so pissed at the Supreme Court because every single decision so far that has been put on by a local judge district judge federal judge having to do with immigration deportation, and any key issues have been settled by the Supreme Court and Trump’s favor. Not that it matters.

And none of it because it’s been unconstitutional as soon as it gets to the Supreme Court looks like it’s falling in Trump’s lap

Back to my earlier post, we have nothing more to say to each other and you can talk about all you want about the hurricane season so far it’s been a dud and it’s still gonna be a dud with this thing evades all landmass, especially in the US but read the meeting I had after I saw my electrophysiologist friend about climate change it. You also seem to have missed that he and Bondi, Trump's barbie doll AG, are being sued by D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb because the whole shebang is also illegal. Haven't you wondered how much all this is costing US taxpayers? After all, you are one of them, you dopey fool.

What happens when Trump has to withdraw the National Guard because presumably they will have better things to do? Will crime suddenly shoot up again in DC? The whole exercise is a theatrical farce, like his military parade, and a costly one too.

That 38% of Americans are the "Hate and Fear Base" of the Republican party. They are composed of the 1% who hate and fear paying the taxes they should be paying, plus White bigots who hate and fear everyone they see as not being like them, and finally the religious voters who fear eternal damnation if they fail to force their reading of their Bibles upon the rest of us. This Base does not think in terms of logical reasoning but only emotional knee-jerk reactions. Republicans also have another 5% who may say they disagree with Trump on some issues but who still support him and every other elcted Republican. Republicans therefore win elections building another 8% of all voters; swing-voters mostly. Thus We must Register new Democrats and waste no time trying to reason with Republicans but only swing-voters.

His evil, self serving and more greedy than king Midas sycophant minions purr sweet nothings into his ear, supporting his dementia like a queen bee is surrounded by worker bees who cater to her every whim. It is truly nauseating to be battered and beaten as liberal voters have been since at least 2015. It’s been a constant bombardment with no safe place to escape to for peace and safety. Even the hardest rock will eventually be worn away by the force of moving water. It might not seem like it, but I am grateful that I made a choice many years ago to do my best to follow a faith that provides a safe resting place to dwell when I grow weary and discouraged. In these times, I would be lost otherwise.

I am Swiss. In Switzerland, which is rated five on The Econmist's democracy index, while the USA is rated 27, voting by mail-in ballot is the preferred method of casting votes. I nearly 'popped my pacifier' (a Swiss-German expression showing surprise and disgust) when I read Trump's blatant lie that no other country has mail-in voting. 'Horseshit' is too nice an adjective to describe this nonsense. Horseshit, at least, has some value; this lie is malicious.

Yeah! And I forgot to mention, that because we have a lot of initiatives and referendums, (the Swiss are proud of their 'direct democracy), we Swiss are called on to vote several times a year. We are then sent all the information regarding the vote and have various options for returning our 'ballot', including the Post!!

Don’t forget that he may very well have rigged the 2024 presidential elections, at least the ones where the decision could be critically influenced by the voting machines. There’s credible evidence presented in the Smart Elections Substack (Google Russian tail also). We won’t know until there’s a recall but it’s much harder to corrupt mail-in ballots. Hence another reason for the push to electronic voting machines.

I keep forgetting, voters hate to read, that's why NO ONE even looked at the 900-page proof of what they have been doing behind the scenes for years!! This has been a silent war! WE ARE LOSING!!! I don't understand why the Dem. leaders have been ignoring my warnings for over a year! I have sent them the evidence; crickets!! BUT I do have an adopted, mixed-race son, who is only 14, his skin tone is more brown, than black. Who will protect him from this racist administration, when I'm no longer here?! My family is dropping dead around me; there will be NO ONE left to protect him! Who knew 13 years ago, when he was adopted, that life would turn out this way, and worse?! NOT me, I bet there are those here who are the same age I was when my son was adopted! Once Democrats control the House again Trump will be impeached again and Republicans in the Senate will again violate their oath of office to "...support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic..." Trump has been impeached twice and the evidence against him was beyond the reasonable doubt both times. Thus the problem we have is the Republican party and not simply Trump. The GOP died with IKE. These people are in the same group as Putin, global corporatist fascist.

We must register millions of new Democrats. Hold house parties to assure all Democrats know the ballot and how to vote with it. Assure all Democrats have a means to vote. Keep our eyes open and record anything that appears to be a staged reality show produced by Trump & Co. to create the civil war he has been wanting since Jan. 20th.

I hear you, but we can’t lose hope. For moments, yes, but we have to push through and then keep going. If we are silent, we are giving up.

When I’m struggling I think of the smaller changes I might be making.

I don’t think we’ll see many big waves (like a major MAGA Congress member changing their opinions), however I think we can cause little ripples. I’m thinking staff members who hear the same thing over and over via voicemail, phone calls, letter after letter, email after email - maybe they’ll be a little more receptive each time they hear from us. Maybe they’ll talk more about our talking points to friends and family, maybeeee they’ll vote differently. I think we can cause ripples to push news organizations to be more honest and maybe even a bit accusatory about what’s happening. As a collective, our volume matters. And, at the end of the day, if we just annoy and overwhelm some staffers working for people hurting the average American, I’m ok with that too 🙃
