I am in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, and don’t think it’s possible for anyone who has written as much as I have about political conventions not to want to dive into some past history of them even as modern history is being made. So I hope you’ll indulge me in a little historical spelunking as I write in the next few days.

But as eager as I am to see a convention in 3D for once after seeing so many on paper, I always hate to leave a Maine summer.

This picture is a friend's view of the harbor at sunrise:

Having experienced both, I judge a Maine summer to be vastly superior to a Chicago summer. To leave Maine in August, to anywhere else on earth, is truly taking one for the team.
